Warning! Spoilers for The Variants #1 by Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics turned heads after publishing cover art for The Variants featuring Jessica Jones sharing a kiss as they traversed across Hell's Kitchen. However, it turns out the romance isn't what it seems and has a much more tragic meaning than initially believed. In The Variants #2, a Jessica Jones variant who appears to have lost her version of Daredevil is rejected by the Earth-616 hero, who doesn't understand why she is kissing him.

Alongside her husband, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, Jones teamed up with Daredevil and other Marvel Comics heroes in different versions of the Defenders. Most famously, Jones, Cage, Iron Fist, and Daredevil worked together as a team in Netflix's live-action Defenders series, where Krysten Ritter played Jessica. Now, a version of Jessica Jones is being teased as being romantically involved with Matt Murdock, but the relationship seems to have a tragic backstory.

However, it's revealed a variant of Jones is being tracked down by Daredevil, as the hero is worried about her health after seeing the Earth-616 previously out. Once the variant sees Daredevil, she thanks god and tells him to "shut up" so she can "breathe you in." Then, she plants a kiss on Matt Murdock while telling him how much she's missed him.

Jessica Jones Daredevil Kiss

Daredevil tells Jessica to stop and asks her why she is kissing him. After getting rejected, a tearful Jones tells him to "go away" before she hurts him. The romance between Matt and Jessica is surprising as the pair have never been romantically involved. However, it seems the Jessica Jones variant did have a romance with Daredevil on her Earth and seemingly lost him at some point, as the encounter hints at a tragic nature behind their relationship. She can't help but be overcome with emotion seeing Murdock again.

So, no, the main version of Jessica Jones didn't cheat on Luke Cage, nor does she have romantic feelings for Daredevil. Instead, The Variants #2 hints that one of the main variants of Jones had a romance with Matt Murdock in her reality, but it seems to have ended tragically - making her encounter with the Earth-616 hero sad and sad complicated. Ultimately, Jessica Jones and Daredevil's romance isn't what it initially appeared to be, even if it makes for a heartbreaking moment.
