Spoilers ahead for Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths #3
In the latest issue of Justice Society of America is ready for its well-deserved time in the spotlight. With new threats on the horizon such as Deathstroke, Pariah, and the Great Darkness, there's never been a better time for the JSA to make a major comeback.
Previously in DC's Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths from Joshua Williamson and Daniel Sampere, the world has been grappling with the apparent death of the entire Justice League (save for Black Adam). In the wake of their absence, Slade Wilson's Deathstroke and his army of villains have been emboldened, attacking the Teen Titans Academy and effectively daring heroes to rise up to take the Justice League's place. While Jon Kent's Superman made the attempt and recruited a new team of heroes, he was quickly shut down by Black Adam who believed they weren't ready to replace the League.
Black Adam doubles down in the new Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths #3, trying to push this new League to "do what must be done" and start killing Deathstroke's forces. Refusing to do so and not having a lot of hope to begin with, this new League ultimately falls apart, leaving Jon Kent's Superman, Damian Wayne's Robin, and Yara Flor's Wonder Woman alone on the Hall of Justice steps. However, this creates the perfect opportunity for the dynamic return of the Justice Society of America, the Justice League's perfect replacements.
Considering Ted Grant's Wildcat and his comment that the JSA should have been called first as soon as the Justice League was gone, it's definitely a no-brainer in hindsight. Comprised of JSA both old and new, the full roster appears to be Alan Scott's Green Lantern, Obsidian, Jade, Khalid Nassour's Doctor Fate, Beth Chapel's Dr. Mid-Nite, Cyclone, Power Girl, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, both Wildcats, Atom Smasher, Hourman, and Jakeem Thunder. It's also likely that Jay Garrick's Flash will be involved at some point as well, though he's currently with the Flash Family searching for Barry Allen. However, it's more than understandable if some fans haven't thought about the JSA in a while. After all, the team hasn't really been utilized since before the New 52 retcons and even after many of the original heroes came back to the DC continuity following the DC/Watchmen crossover Doomsday Clock.
At any rate, the fact that DC's original team has returned to sub in for the Justice League is very exciting. After years of being on the sidelines and essentially being forgotten/ignored by the publisher, Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths is the JSA's time to shine as The Great Darkness rises to consume the multiverse.
