With The Sentry's MCU debut on the horizon, the Void won’t be far behind. A new Marvel comic has just unveiled the perfect way to reimagine this chaotic villain, refining what makes him so compelling. The Void has often been depicted as overly abstract and confusing, but this fresh take hones in on what truly makes him the Sentry’s greatest foe.
The solicit and cover for Power Man: Timeless #4—written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, with art by Bernard Chang—offer a fresh look at the latest incarnation of the Void, the Sentry’s dark alter ego, now taking shape as Luke Cage’s shadow self.
Andrei Bressan’s cover for issue #4 presents the Void as a literal negative of Luke Cage’s Sentry, a design first introduced in issue #2 by the same creative team, where the Void taunted Cage, urging him to succumb to his despair and worst instincts.
Luke Cage’s Far-Future Power Upgrade Comes with a Dark Price
Marvel Reinvents the Void as Luke Cage’s Own Worst Enemy
This version of Luke Cage and the Void doesn’t hail from the mainstream Marvel Universe but has ended up there regardless, thanks to time travel. This Luke is a far-future version of himself who has gained the powersets of numerous heroes, including the Hulk, Iron Fist, and, most importantly, the Sentry. Unfortunately, this also means inheriting the Void, the Sentry’s dark opposite. However, as the solicit for issue #4 reveals, Luke Cage may be forced to rely on the Void, as it might be the only force strong enough to defeat the new villain, Aeon the Knife.

Marvel's Most Powerful 1v1 Battle of All Time Just Started
What if every major Marvel superpower was granted to one of two fighters, then they went to war? Timeless 2023 is Marvel's Earth-shattering answer.
The Void is perhaps the most complicated part of the Sentry’s already convoluted backstory. Bonded to Robert Reynolds, the mentally unstable original Sentry, a reader’s first assumption might be that the Void is simply an extension of Robert—his fractured mental state combined with his nigh-unstoppable power. However, later stories contradicted this, depicting the Void as a separate entity—an immortal horror that bonded to Robert. Power Man: Timeless takes the first approach to its natural conclusion, presenting Luke Cage’s Void as a grinning, evil version of himself—his worst emotions made manifest.
Marvel’s MCU Thunderbolts Must Get the Void Right
The Sentry’s Darkest Side Risks Becoming Just Another Generic Villain
Hopefully, the adaptation of both Sentry and the Void in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thunderbolts will hew closer to this new interpretation. Sentry is a fascinating character, but the Void has the potential to become nothing more than a generic, immaterial, unstoppable evil, which could result in a highly unsatisfying portrayal if handled poorly. The Void needs to remain mysterious, but in a way that suggests it could simply be a part of Sentry himself; hence, this new comic version of the villain perfectly demonstrates how to walk that fine line.
