Summary
- Improve Dark Souls 2's gameplay with a new mod that allows frame rates of 120fps and up for smoother combat experiences.
- Higher FPS can enhance player experience by improving enemy hitbox readability and combat fluidity in challenging encounters.
- The DS2FrameUnlimiter mod stills needs testing and should be treated like a beta build.
The second Dark Souls game may be the most maligned entry in the franchise but a new mod may restore some players' faith in FromSoftware's classic RPG. Ever since its first launch in 2014 and the subsequent Scholar of the First Sin edition in 2015, players have lamented Dark Souls 2's technical performance even on hardware that should be able to run the game at incredibly high frame rates. While it might have taken a year, one committed fan clearly had enough of the less-than-favorable frames and did something about it.
Released onto Nexus Mods by creator emoose (via GamesRadar+), the "DS2FrameUnlimiter" does exactly what it says: It removes Dark Souls 2's framelimiter, making the game run at speeds of 120fps and up on a PC that can it. Additionally, it also corrects some issues with mechanics being linked to the framerate such as the regeneration of HP and Stamina which is thrown off kilter when the frames-per-second increase past 60. Emoose does request that anyone who tries the mod be patient with what's on offer, noting that they view it as a "proof of concept" or beta for the final build.

Dark Souls 2 Plays Much Better At A Higher FPS
The ability to smooth out Dark Souls 2's frames could make certain sections of the game significantly easier for players looking to test their luck.
Given the series' penchant for punishing gameplay and difficult enemy encounters, the ability to smooth out Dark Souls 2's frames could make certain sections of the game significantly easier for players looking to test their luck. Having attack animations play out smoother should make it easier to read enemy hitboxes while also avoiding their moves, especially in encounters with multiple foes like The Royal Rat Vanguard, Twin Dragonriders, and the Ruin Sentinels. It's entirely possible to play Dark Souls 2 on 30fps, but the higher the better.
