Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Darth Maul Black, White & Red #1

Summary

  • The Sith seek power and control in the name of order.
  • The Force cult known as The Final Occultation seeks to bring absolute chaos and galaxy-wide anarchy.
  • Darth Maul concentrates on the Sith's core principles in his new Black, White & Red series, putting him in direct opposition with the Final Occultation.

Star Wars series confirms a core truth about the Dark Lords of the Sith and their use of the dark side of the Force. In the established canon, the Jedi and Sith are not the only two games in the galaxy when it comes to groups of Force wielders (though they're certainly the biggest/most prominent). However, Darth Maul's encounter with a brand-new Force cult confirms some very important facts about the Sith.

In Marvel Comics' new Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #1 by Benjamin Percy and Stefano Raffaele, Darth Maul is tasked by his master Darth Sidious to investigate a prison ship overtaken by the Force cult known as the Final Occultation. Although Sidious originally wanted Maul to take prisoners to learn more about their powers sourced from the "netherworld of the Force", Maul discovers that this horrifying Force cult is devoted to the concepts of pure pain, chaos, and anarchy, rather than control and order sought by the Sith.

Darth Maul Seeks Order Over Chaos In Black White and Red

Falling back on his training from Darth Sidious, Maul is featured in this first issue doing all he can to resist the power of the Final Occultation which threatens to break his mind and drive him to absolute madness, concentrating on the key Sith principles of control in the name of order.

Star Wars' Final Occultation Worships Order

The core concept hammered home in this first issue of Darth Maul: Black, White & Red is that the Force is far from being black and white, or light and dark with only the Jedi and Sith in opposition to each other. There are more than two aspects of the Force, and more sects of wielders beyond the biggest two that get talked about. To that end, it's not surprising that two groups of dark side wielders would clash based on how they use the Force and their respective goals.

Ray Park as Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace

Palpatine's apprentice, Darth Maul was nothing more than a tool to winnow down the ranks of the Jedi ahead of Darth Sidious' true plans. Discarded after he was defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi on Naboo, Darth Maul swore revenge against all those he blamed for his past struggles - Jedi and Sith alike. Maul tended to operate within the shadows, running various syndicates, and even established himself as a true rival for Palpatine on at least one occasion. He was eventually killed by Obi-Wan in a duel on Tatooine.

For example, the Sith seek greater power and use the Force to control those who are weaker, looking to create systems of order with their rule as Dark Lords (like Palpatine's eventual Galactic Empire or the Sith Empires of the Old Republic). This is in direct contrast to how the Final Occultation uses the Force. They only seek pain and chaos on a galaxy-wide scale. All they want is total and complete anarchy.

Using The Dark Side To Establish Control

Maul Understands Need For Control

Taking it upon himself to destroy this Force cult (even though Palpatine wanted prisoners), it's clear that Darth Maul's experience in this issue served to strengthen his belief in the ideals of the Sith before the events of The Phantom Menace. Power and control are necessary to maintain order, though none of the power used by the Final Occultation would have served the traditional goals of the Sith. As such, Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #1 is a very exciting first issue that reaffirms how the Sith operate within the dark side of the Force.

Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
