After initially not liking David Corenswet's superhero suit for James Gunn's DCU's movies and series as Superman.
Then came Hollywood — also on Netflix — a year later, in 2020. This was the first time I saw Corenswet in a leading role, and it was enough to cement my favorite pick for the next Superman. At the time, Henry Cavill was still Superman in the DCEU; however, I was never a fan of the darker version of the hero in that universe. I was ready for a change, and when Corenswet was announced as the Clark Kent of Gunn's Superman reboot, I was ecstatic. Sadly, my first impressions of Corenswet's Superman suit were not great.

Who Is David Corenswet? James Gunn's Superman Actor Explained
David Corenswet has officially been cast as Clark Kent in the DCU’s Superman: Legacy, leading many to wonder about his career up to this point.
I Was Not A Fan Of David Corenswet’s Superman Suit Reveal
I Think They Made The Wrong Choice
As mentioned, I wanted DC to shake the cinematic status quo of the hero, and to do that, there needed to be a radical change in different aspects of the Man of Steel. One of the most important of those was the Superman suit, as the DCEU gave Cavill a cool costume but devoid of color. While that version of the Superman suit was perfectly fine for the DCEU, as it fit director Zack Snyder's vision for the Man of Steel, I wanted something that was completely different for the DCU.
I understand why some people might think they look goofy or old-fashioned, but the red trunks are just a classic part of Superman's visual identity.
In a way, I got what I wanted. One of my biggest requests for the new Superman suit was that it included the iconic red trunks. I understand why some people might think they look goofy or old-fashioned, but the red trunks are just a classic part of Superman's visual identity. For me, they would be a clear sign that DC was going for a more classic route with Corenswet's Superman, and I'm glad they are part of his final look. However, the suit reveal for the new Superman was completely the opposite of what I expected.
Superman was sitting down with a stern expression while putting on his boots, and some kind of major energy fight was going on in the Metropolis sky in the background. While it was reassuring to see the red trunks, the tone of the Superman suit reveal genuinely confused me, as it was not at all what I thought Gunn would go for. The Superman suit was also dirty, not revealing its true colors, which was an incredibly odd decision. Details such as the New 52-esque lines were also not to my liking, leaving me wary.

8 Biggest Differences Between David Corenswet & Henry Cavill's Superman Suits
Following the first look at the DC Universe's Superman, there are some clear differences between David Corenswet and Henry Cavill's Superman suits.
I Love How The DCU Superman Looks In Set Photos
Corenswet Was Made For The Role
After some time confused about the direction the Superman movie was going in, I'm glad to say that Gunn has now won me over. For months, Superman filmed behind closed doors, which recently changed as the production moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Shooting outdoors, Superman set photos started to come out, giving fans a better look at Corenswet's Superman costume and the first look at several characters who will appear in the movie. After new set photos of Corenswet's Superman, I am glad to say that I love the new Superman suit.
Sure, there are a few details that I think could be improved. I'm still not totally sold on the lines, and, like a lot of fans, I think the suit looks baggy, though that could be something they chose to perfect in post-production. Those issues aside, the new Superman costume hits all the right notes for me. The colors pop like they never did in Cavill's Superman suit, with Corenswet standing out from everyone in every single shot of him on the movie's set. It's really the classic Superman look I was hoping for in the movie.

Filming is underway on Superman, and among set photos of David Corenswet suited up as the Man of Steel and more, DC Easter Eggs have been spotted.
James Gunn’s Superman Movie Needs To Match The Suit’s Tone
I Think The DCU Film Will
With the Superman suit now matching the tone I expected, I just hope that the movie will as well. I thought Cavill was a great casting choice for the Man of Steel, though I was not fond of the material he was given to work with. Now that the DCEU is over, I'm ready for this next theatrical chapter for Superman to be as bright and optimistic as the hero is known to be in the comics. No more Superman killing or being depressed. I want a Superman who inspires others and is a beacon of light.
Corenswet's Superman suit reveal was disappointing to me because of how dark it looked and the overall tone of the image, as I'm over doom and gloom in Superman movies. Thankfully, now that I've seen Corenswet's Superman suit from several different angles and even watched it in movement, with tidbits of Corenswet's performance as Superman, it seems like I'm seeing all my dreams come true for this iteration of the DC icon. Given Corenswet's 5-year-old Superman comments, perhaps I should never have faltered in my faith in the movie's direction in the first place. Check out Corenswet's Superman comments below:
“It came to my attention before the internet got a hold of me [that Corenswet looks similar to Henry Cavill], but my pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman. I would love to see somebody do an upbeat, throwback [take on Superman]. I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take, but I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic.”

Mister Terrific’s Comics-Accurate Costume Confirms I Should Be Excited For DCU Super Suits
Superman Isn't The Only One Looking Good
There are going to be multiple DCU heroes in Superman, with characters like Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, Hawkgirl, the Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and possibly more in the movie. With Superman set photos emerging, fans got the first look at one of those heroes, as Edi Gathegi's Mister Terrific was spotted alongside Corenswet's Man of Steel. The DCU gave Mister Terrific a very comic book-accurate costume, complete with his black, white, and red "Fair Play" jacket.

Who Is Mister Terrific? Origin, Powers & DC Universe Future Explained
Edi Gathegi has been cast as Mister Terrific in Superman (2025). Here's a full breakdown of the DC Comics superhero.
I think Mister Terrific looks, well, terrific. The comic book-accurate costume for the hero makes me confident that DC will knock it out of the park with the rest of the superhero costumes for the movie and the shared universe as a whole. After being initially disappointed by Corenswet's Superman suit, I'm now at ease with the direction the DCU movie is taking for its superhero suits and the project's overall tone. I'm now excited to watch the movie's first trailer to see how they look onscreen, which can only be even better than in the Superman set photos.
