The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie is a feature-length Looney Tunes film starring Daffy Duck and Porky Pig. The sci-fi-themed outing marks the first fully animated Looney Tunes theatrical movie and focuses on Daffy Duck and Porky Pig as they must learn to work together to save the world from nefarious aliens who use mind control. With Tom & Jerry writer Kevin Costello on script duties and Looney Tunes veteran Pete Browngardt directing, The Day the Earth Blew Up is a momentous occasion in the nearly century-old franchise.

The Looney Tunes have made the jump to theatrical movies in the past, but films like Space Jam and Looney Tunes Back in Action blended live-action segments with the cartoons. Despite the franchise's grand theatrical debut, the development of The Day the Earth Blew Up was anything but smooth, with Warner Bros. shifting its release plan several times since it was announced in 2021. Fortunately, the movie did eventually see the light of day (unlike the ill-fated Coyote vs. Acme), and is actually a stellar theatrical experience.

Positive Reviews Despite No Build-Up

After the movie scored rave reviews when it debuted at film festivals in late 2024, that trend continued when The Day the Earth Blew Up finally got a wide release. Ketchup Entertainment's first major distribution project has earned an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score in the high 80s, and is getting solid write-ups from critics who have seen it. Roger Ebert gave the movie 3 out of 4 stars and praised the character development, while The Hollywood Reporter remarked on the timeless quality that so few modern animated films can capture. Overall, Daffy and Porky's big-screen debut was a critical success.

From a financial standpoint, The Day the Earth Blew Up was never expected to become the next big blockbuster. Though Ketchup Entertainment saved the film from purgatory, the small distributor didn't do much to the film, resulting in somewhat lackluster returns. The film scored around $3 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend (via Box Office Mojo), and it's unclear how much the movie will need to break even.

Coyote vs. Acme has been permanently shelved and there are currently no plans to release the film.

The Day the Earth Blew Up was not only humorous, but it paid off the story in an exquisitely heartfelt way. Though Daffy and Porky assume the role of Earth's heroes as they attempt to stop the aliens' nasty plan, they actually learn a lot about themselves and the nature of their relationship too. A series of well-earned twists serve as a moral lesson for the characters and the audience, and that's what helps make The Day the Earth Blew Up such an appealing film for young and old.
