Bandai Namco's action-RPG the story of Future Trunks before he arrived in the main timeline of the series. Not much is known about the able content, but a trailer and recently-released screenshots reveal some of what players can expect, including possible fights and story beats.
From Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's DLC reveal trailer, the next story will be based on the television special Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks, which takes place in an alternate future. In this story, Trunks is still the son of Bulma and Vegeta, but this version comes from an Earth where Goku dies from a heart virus. With Goku unable to protect the planet, this timeline's Android 17 and 18 arrive and take out the rest of the Z-Fighters, save for Gohan, and plunge the world into uncertainty and chaos. With the world's greatest fighters gone, it's up to an adult Gohan to train Trunks to give humanity one final chance to fight back.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's gameplay emphasizes the ability to explore the overworld before getting into the series' signature battles, and players should expect the same with this DLC. They'll likely run and fly around post-apocalyptic versions of towns like West City while gathering items and accepting various quests. When it's time to enter major battles, players will likely reenact the story of the television special and perhaps even parts of the main Dragon Ball Z story, which played out during the Android and Cell Sagas.
What Trunks' Warrior of Hope DLC Story Will Be Like
Going by the events of the television special, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot players will likely begin the story training under this alternate future Gohan. This training will lead to another attack by the Androids, but Trunks' inexperience causes Gohan to try and save him, which results in the trainer losing his arm. Trunks and Gohan will have another fight with the Androids, but the latter knocks the former unconscious, knowing he isn't strong enough and would end up dying. Although Gohan holds his own, he is eventually overtaken by the duo and killed. When Trunks awakens and finds his mentor's body, his anger and grief unlocks his Super Saiyan form.
Trying to change their future, Bulma then builds a time machine and sends Trunks to the past (the main timeline) where he saves Goku from the heart virus and defeats Cyborg Frieza. This story was played out in the main Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot game, so it's highly unlikely players will have to go through it again. However, Bandai Namco released a screenshot (above) showing Cell in his first form. This reveals the Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot DLC will likely show what happens when Future Trunks returns to his own time after the events of the Cell Saga.
There is one timeline where Cell ambushes an unsuspecting Trunks and takes his time machine, leading to the Cell that appears in the main DBZ timeline. Players will likely see what happened at the end of the Cell Saga where Future Trunks returns to his timeline and destroys his version of Cell to save his future. With details on the Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot DLC still under wraps, there's likely a lot more to expect before the game's release later this year.
