John Constantine. Zatanna may be the most powerful homo-magi in DC Comics but her off-and-on relationship with the anti-hero, John Constantine, is something magic can’t fix.

In DC's preview for Zatanna #1 – written and illustrated by Jamal Campbell – there is a deck of tarot cards that feature various DC heroes, and John Constantine is seen portraying “The Fool” card, a selection that perfectly sums up Zatanna and Constantine’s exciting yet tumultuous dynamic.

The Fool tarot card represents new beginnings, taking risks, and not knowing what’s to come of the future. The card alludes to aspects that can be attributed both to Zatanna’s new beginning and Constantine’s impromptu approach to both magic and his relationship with the famous, fish-netted hero.

Zatanna & Constantine Are An Iconic DC Couple, But Constantine Is Notoriously Self-Destructive

Zatanna #1 – Written & Illustrated By Jamal Campbell; Lettering By Ariana Maher

While Zatanna and Constantine are two of the most powerful magic wielders in DC and have had one of the most alluring dynamics, their relationship has never fully stuck due to the unstable nature of John Constantine. John Constantine has been depicted as a hero more often than not, but he has the terrible tendency to use others around him including Zatanna. Constantine, representing “The Fool” tarot card, hints at the series divining into Zatanna’s past relationships, possibly even finally clearing the air about her and Constantine or steering Zatanna to move on to better relationships.

As Zatanna begins her new chapter, she finally has the space to continue this arc of her realizing she is more than her ability to conjure magic.

In Superman #18 – written by Joshua Williamson, with art by Jamal Campbell – Zatanna its to Superman she doesn’t know who she is without magic and that she has been unhappy with her relationships, noting the only relationship she has is with a chain-smoker who sold his soul to demons. Zatanna is, of course, referencing Constantine and his unreliability within their relationship. As Zatanna begins her new chapter, she finally has the space to continue this arc of her realizing she is more than her ability to conjure magic.

John Constantine is his relationship with Zatanna is both ionate yet complex, as his selfishness and unpredictability knows no limits. Should Constantine return, Zatanna’s new beginnings of independence away from the Justice League and the realm of superheroes would mark an advantageous time to call back to Zatanna’s heart-to-heart with Superman. As Zatanna continues her arc to fully understand her worth outside of the realm of magic, there is always the uncertainty of whether Constantine will help or harm her journey.
