While Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad are ostensibly not DCU canon, James Gunn has revealed that certain cherry-picked events from DCEU installments will be canonized through references.
While Superman will be the first live-action movie of the DCU, Creature Commandos will launch the franchise in earnest. In an off-piste move by DC Studios, certain animations that do not fall under DC's Elseworlds banner will be a part of the DCU's mainline continuity. This means that Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. and Viola Davis' Amanda Waller will be portraying exactly the same character in both animated and live-action offerings from the DCU. Anyone truly invested in the future of this reboot should probably consider catching Creature Commandos.
