In Green Lantern: War Journal #7 by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Montos, John has been kidnapped by the Revenant Queen, the daughter of the mad god Olgrun. Green Lantern is caught in the orbit of a mysterious breach in space-time known as the Dark Star of Fenn and can't seem to escape its pull.

On Earth, John's newest ally, Green Lantern Caolán Shepherd, looks to the construct of Stewart's sister Ellie for assistance. When that fails, Shepherd heads out to find a "proper ring wilder" and someone John trusts more than anyone else: Green Lantern Guy Gardner.

Despite leaving the Green Lantern Corps, John Stewart was thrown back into action when the DC Universe was invaded by the Radiant Dead. Faced with the prospect of an army of undead monsters assimilating anything they came into with, John teamed up with Shepherd to stop the Radiant Dead from extinguishing the Green Light of Willpower. Stewart and Shepherd were making headway on their quest until they came across the Revenant Queen, who revealed that the Radiant Dead were just fractions of Olgrun's power and that the Old God had come to claim Green Lantern as his vessel.
