With the recent success of Gotham Knights and the pending release of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, a video game based on Jack Kirby's New Gods would be another win for DC games, and a potential instant success on the PlayStation 5. While a video game based on New Gods would have some pitfalls to overcome, a PS5-exclusive version would be a smart and profitable decision for potential developers.
New Gods, the comic series created by famed comic book artist Jack Kirby, began in 1971 and was a massively influential series for generations of DCU comics. Today, New Gods characters like Darkseid and Steppenwolf have grown in popularity, and have been featured as major characters in video games and the Snyder cut of Justice League. Several other underrated DC heroes don't have their own game yet, but a PS5-exclusive New Gods game could answer that problem, and look really great in doing so.
The PlayStation 5 Would Present A Beautifully Realized New Gods Video Game
The New Gods series of comics was a visual masterpiece, showcasing some of Jack Kirby's most visually ambitious styles while telling the equally enthralling story of New Genesis and Apokolips. A New Gods video game, therefore, would have to be just as visually ambitious, presenting a daunting challenge for any potential developer. While the Batman: Arkham series, the Injustice series, and Gotham Knights have presented gritty, realistic visions of DC characters, LEGO DC games have, interestingly enough, brought brevity and color to the famously dour DCU. A New Gods game would have to find a way to capitalize on what makes these games great, while honoring Jack Kirby's stunning work.
The PlayStation 5's fidelity mode and ray tracing features make the console most suitable for a New Gods video game adaptation. The system's hardware optimizes the visual presentation of any game and is responsible for arguably the most faithfully realized and realistic lighting in gaming. These visual features make for the most visually stunning versions of any game developed for the platform, and if any gaming console is going to make a New Gods video game shine brightest, it would be the PS5.
What kind of game New Gods would become, however, is worth speculation. Marvel has already tried its hand at a wide variety of high-concept superhero games, and older DC games like the Arkham series have been popular. Whatever form it would take, New Gods could be a transitional work for DC games, adapting a tremendously influential comic series on a console perfectly tailored for it.
