Spoilers for Future State: Superman of Metropolis #1 ahead!
In Superman from his father. Yet Jon has some key differences from his father and they are on display for fans to see in Future State: The Superman of Metropolis #1. Written by Sean Lewis, with art by John Timms and colors by Gabe Eltaeb, the issue is in stores now.
Future State is a two-month event that transports readers into a futuristic DC Universe. The regular DC Universe line of titles will suspend publication and be replaced by a collection of mini-series and anthologies. Much has changed, such as Swamp Thing ruling the Earth and Gotham ruled over by a fascist government. It is a dark, brutal world and its new Superman reflects this. Since his mother was a human, Jon is only half-Kryptonian, which makes him weaker than his father.
Brain Cells, an artificial intelligence partially created by Trojan from the remains of Brainiac. It is revealed that Brain Cells was largely responsible for infusing some citizens of Metropolis with Trojan’s technology, and he claimed to do it to make humans better. Jon seems to have some sort of relationship with Brain Cells, as it tries to get him to work with it, something Jon is clearly not interested in - it is an unusual relationship, and one his father would not have had.
If DC wished to show readers just how dark the world of Future State is, the changes they made to Superman best demonstrate this. He is much edgier than his father, reflecting the world around him. Yet through it all, he remains committed to protecting Metropolis - even if it means shrinking the city and everyone in to microscopic size. How long will it stay shrunken? And what would his father think?
Future State has shocked DC fans with its grim world and shocking new status quos for many of its heroes - and Jon Kent's Superman is among them. This is not the Superman readers are used to.
