Though he will hopefully be The Batman, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the Batman that audiences have gotten comfortable with over the past six years.
Though the movies themselves were polarising, the Batman that was portrayed in the DC Extended Universe was largely well-liked, but might not be for everyone. The unpopular opinions about Affleck’s Batman swing far and wide, from some fans labeling him the best there has ever been, to others criticizing everything under the sun about him.
Batman Should Have Been A ing Character In Batman V Superman
With the most famous and commercially successful DC hero being introduced in what is essentially Man of Steel 2, some were quick to think it was a financial decision more than an artistic direction. But Batman’s scenes turned out to be the best in the whole movie, whether it was the fight in the warehouse or trying to murder Superman.
However, Batman v Superman should have focused on the conflict between Superman and Lex Luthor.
Zack Snyder Was Right About Batman’s One Rule
When he asked Superman, “Do you bleed?”, it wasn’t just an empty threat, as Batman goes on an almost murderous rampage. Zack Snyder made the decision to have Batman use lethal force on his enemies, which goes against his only rule.
This rubbed so many fans the wrong way, but there are a handful of Redditors that believe it was a good decision. They argue that Snyder’s idea of Batman is based on the classic graphic novel, Dark Knight, which features a much more cynical and less forgiving Batman, and they claim that his moral com is what makes the character so interesting.
The Batsuit Is Not Good
Though the Batman in the DCEU has drawn so many criticisms, mostly due to him breaking his one rule, there is one thing specifically that the fans have universally praised. The Batsuit in the DCEU is more comic book accurate than any other Batman movie that came before Dawn of Justice.
But not everyone agrees. have nipples on it.
Ben Affleck Is The Best Batman
Overall, of all the actors considered to play Batman, Ben Affleck was a good pick for Zack Snyder’s depiction of the character. But though he was a good Batman and he showed great potential for the future of the series, Affleck unfortunately didn’t get to show how great he could be, as his tenure as the bat was unfairly cut short.
However, there are a select few who believe that the actor was by far the best Batman there has ever been. They argue that Affleck’s portrayal of the character actually fights like Batman, unlike other big-screen depictions, and that his suit and voice changer were badass.
Batman Being Scary Was A Great Idea
In Batman v Superman, the caped crusader is introduced in a rather jarring way, especially to those who are more well versed with the 90s Batman movies. He was introduced like it was a horror movie, as Gotham’s finest enter a run-down building full of caged women, and in the basement is a man in chains, all bloody, and with Batman’s logo branded on his chest.
And while most fans just couldn’t get on board with the branding, one Redditor argues that the scarier depiction of the flawed character was perfectly realistic.
The Character Didn’t Have A Decent Theme
One of the greatest things about the DCEU is Wonder Woman’s theme. That screeching electric guitar is what drives so many of her scenes, but when it comes to Batman, the movies went in a much different direction.
In the theatrical cut of the throwback music was one of the best pieces of fan service in the movie. But there are some who believe that the 30-year-old theme wasn’t enough. They argue that the iconic piece of music should have been reworked into a brand new theme.
Starting The Universe With A Jaded Batman Was A Bad Idea
In Batman v Superman, the hero is introduced as already existing and being well-known to Gotham in the series. This meant that he had seen so much already, and it led him to become pretty nihilistic. The decision was praised by most fans, even if he was sulkier than ever.
But this Redditor argues that it makes the life-span of the cinematic universe too short before it has even begun. However, for the most part, fans embraced the older, more jaded Batman, and his cynical outlook on life is exactly what made him unique from the countless other variations of Batman that have been depicted on the big screen.
Zack Snyder Doesn’t Understand Batman
This Redditor posits that the style-over-substance movie director doesn’t understand Batman. However, in this case, it’s one of the clearest times that Snyder has ever given fans something of substance. Outside of the Batmobile, which is essentially a sports car with tons of military-grade weapons attached to it, and the whole no-killing rule, everything related to Batman is right on the money.
Snyder understands Batman so well that it seemed like he sidelined Superman in his own movie just to build the character of Bruce Wayne. Even Alfred, who has only ever really been depicted as a whiner who helps Bruce after he's been battered and bruised the night before, is portrayed as being more of a sidekick. That is more faithful to Alfred’s origin, as he was in the army and worked for MI5.
He Wasn’t That Good Of A Detective
Throughout the whole of the DCEU, there have been so many times where Bruce Wayne lives up to the moniker of World’s Greatest Detective, as he has solved a number of mysteries. However, one Redditor claims that he wasn’t a good detective at all.
They use the hard drive, which introduces Batman to every member of the Justice League, as an example, as it’s handed to him on a platter. To the ’s credit, the league was already pre-assembled on a computer file, and each hero somehow already had their logos designed in the file too.
There Should Have Been A Solo Batman Movie To Introduce Him
Though the MCU and DCEU are always pitted against each other as if it’s some kind of competition, they are completely different, as The Avengers came after all of the hero’s solo movies, but Batman was thrust into BvS without ever being introduced. Surprisingly enough, it actually worked, but a small minority disagree. They argue that it didn’t work and that there should have been a Batman solo movie before he popped up in other heroes’ movies.
But that’s exactly why Zack Snyder was the perfect choice to direct BvS. The filmmaker had directed chemistry with the Justice League.
