James Gunn might reboot the Suicide Squad 3 plans. His role with DC grew substantially in late 2022 when it was announced Gunn was the new co-CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran. The new job came after impressing Warner Bros. and DC with The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker season 1, which were both massive critical hits. James Gunn now finds himself in charge of shaping the next 10 years of DC movies, TV shows, and more. The more details that surface point to the likelihood of a reboot or reset of the status quo in some form.
The latest updates on Black Adam's franchise hopes might be dashed. There is no indication that franchise's Gunn was previously involved in will be scrapped, which is problematic.
Peacemaker & Suicide Squad 2’s DCU Connections Complicate Reboot Plans
The idea that James Gunn's DCU reboot is partially being done to disconnect the shared universe's future from the Snyderverse creates a big problem because of what he has already done in the franchise. The Suicide Squad was a soft reboot of the Suicide Squad franchise that retained a few key characters, like Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, and Amanda Waller, but otherwise introduced a new batch of villains. However, Amanda Waller and Harley Quinn both have established histories with Ben Affleck's Batman. A DCU reboot would mean that these characters also have to be left behind, which means Suicide Squad 3 or another project using the same characters cannot happen.
James Gunn went even bigger with the Snyderverse connections in Peacemaker season 1. The show memorably had most of the DCU Justice League team appear in the season finale. Jason Momoa's Aquaman and Ezra Miller's Flash appear to interact with Peacemaker, while silhouettes of Superman and Wonder Woman are shown. These unexpected cameos directly and irreversibly link Peacemaker to the Snyderverse era of DC. James Gunn has even teased that other familiar characters from the DCU could appear, which will further strengthen the interconnectivity of DC's various eras.
James Gunn Might Need To Cancel Peacemaker For DC’s Clean Slate
If James Gunn is serious about a DC reboot that offers him and Peter Safran a clean slate moving forward, that would mean canceling Peacemaker too. He is developing a second season of the hit series for HBO Max (as well as an Amanda Waller spinoff). But, Peacemaker's current history with the Snyderverse makes that a lot trickier. The interconnected web of DC's storytelling over the last few years means John Cena's Peacemaker cannot remain in his current form. As a result, these connections might mean that Peacemaker has to end after its second season (and Suicide Squad 3 cannot happen) so a new DCU era can begin.
