Several months after finding the new Man of Steel for the Gunn's Superman movie is approaching, as the DC Universe gets fully underway in 2025. While the Superman marketing has yet to kick off, more intel has been shared about the casting process for the reboot that led to David Corenswet being cast in the DC hero role.

When a fan asked Gunn on Threads if it was true that Tom Brittney had accidentally torn Henry Cavill's Superman suit during the audition, the DC Studios co-CEO confirmed it to be the case. However, this also happened when David Corenswet came in for his test, as Gunn shared the following:

Yes. Tom messed it up and then Corenswet came in an he was way too tall so it just got torn to shreds. BTW, Tom is truly one of my favorite actors. Incredibly talented guy.

James Gunn answers questions about the Superman audition

While Brittney didn't land the role for Superman in the end, Gunn stressed that he "is truly one of my favorite actors. Incredibly talented guy." Whether or not that means that Brittney could get cast as a different hero or villain in Gunn's DC Universe remains to be seen.

What James Gunn's Superman Costume Story Means For The DCU

It is unclear which Superman costume was used from Cavill's time in the DCEU movie timeline, as his suits were modified between Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Zack Snyder's Justice League. However, another fan asked Gunn if they used "the original suits that Cavill wore in his movies or a replica of sorts" as many were curious about what ended up being worn by Corenswet, Brittney, and whoever else was trying out for Superman. It didn't take long for Gunn to reveal that "it was an original" but was already not "in the best shape" before it got further torn up.

It was an original that wasn’t in the best shape to begin with.

James Gunn Clarifies Henry Cavill's Superman Costume Being Destroyed

It is common for superhero movies, especially reboots, to use costumes from other iterations during the casting process, to help see how an actor could hypothetically look as the character they are auditioning for, including a major role like Superman. This has happened even during the various Batman live-action auditions, with actors donning suits worn by previous stars to have played the Dark Knight. It's likely going to happen too when other roles get recast for Gunn's DC Universe, but whether or not any other old suits will get torn in the process remains to be seen.

James Gunn's New Version of the Superman Movie Logo

While it was obviously unfortunate that one of Cavill's Superman suits got destroyed in the process, it's worth noting that the rest are likely still intact and in the Warner Bros. archives. It also makes sense why they were trying one of the older Cavill suits, as the casting process would warrant seeing the actors in a modern version of the Superman costume as soon as possible. Hopefully, the next time Gunn shares updates about Superman, it will be related to the first trailer, as the world is patiently waiting to see the new DC Universe reboot.
