Summary

  • Wednesday season 2's delay will be eased by Dead Boy Detectives, a supernatural show arriving April 2025 on Netflix.
  • Wednesday's success gives Netflix hope that it can captivate fans with the supernatural elements of another show.
  • Netflix hopes Dead Boy Detectives will match Wednesday's popularity, avoiding a premature cancellation fate as seen with past shows.

Wednesday season 2 renewal, a delay couldn't be prevented.

After debuting the supernatural coming-of-age show in November 2022, Wednesday season 2 won't release until 2025, barring any other unforeseen delays. The second installment was renewed within two months of the show's initial release, but due to cast schedules and the Hollywood labor strikes, production on season 2 didn't commence until early 2024. A three-year gap between seasons isn't ideal. Still, the anticipation will still be high for the next chapter in Wednesday Addams' story, especially since Ortega's stardom keeps growing. While Ortega has her own releases, Netflix also has an enticing show to watch while waiting for Wednesday's return.

Dead Boy Detectives Is A Perfect Show To Watch While Waiting For Wednesday Season 2

The Show Following The Neil Gaiman Characters Can Fill Netflix's Supernatural Void

Before Wednesday season 2 hits Netflix, the streamer will welcome another supernatural show focused on peculiar teens. Arriving April 25th, 2024, Dead Boy Detectives will serve as a fitting replacement for Wednesday fans until season 2 arrives. The series is based on characters developed by Neil Gaiman in 1991, where they appeared in DC Comics' The Sandman series before appearing in other Vertigo publications. Dead Boy Detectives follows two dead teens, Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), who choose to stay on Earth to investigate paranormal mysteries rather than enter the afterlife.

Aside from the fact that Dead Boy Detectives is based on established characters in the same way that Wednesday spawned from The Addams Family franchise, the Netflix show also heavily embraces supernatural elements. The young sleuths will encounter monsters, ghosts, witches, demons, and fellow otherworldly figures in the same way Wednesday incorporates the "outcasts" of Nevermore Academy. Though Wednesday doesn't identify her purpose as a detective, season 1 shows her in full-detective mode, investigating the Hyde's identity and other mysteries surrounding her school.

Dead Boy Detectives was originally developed as a spinoff of Doom Patrol for HBO Max after Edwin and Charles appeared in season 3. The series then moved to Netflix after it didn't fit the DC Universe's current plans, and the roles were recast.

Wednesday Season 2's Popularity Is A Good Sign For Dead Boy Detectives

Netflix Still Needs To Be Cautious With Dead Boy Detectives' Future

While everyone waits patiently for Wednesday season 2, including any exciting updates surrounding the new installment, Dead Boy Detectives could be Netflix's short-term answer in bringing in viewers who gravitate toward supernatural shows. Like the case with Wednesday and its Addams Family references, Dead Boy Detectives already has somewhat of an established fanbase through the comics. The show is also a spinoff of Netflix's The Sandman, which was renewed for season 2 in 2022, so Netflix could be banking on that shared universe.

The streamer has developed enticing projects that resulted in positive reviews, only for Netflix to cancel the shows without giving the shows time to build viewership.

Granted, Netflix doesn't have the best history with its supernatural shows with teenage leads. The streamer has developed enticing projects that resulted in positive reviews, only for Netflix to cancel the shows without giving the shows time to build viewership. Some recent examples of promising supernatural mystery shows that Netflix canceled after one season include Lockwood & Co., The Society, The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself, and The Midnight Club. Hopefully, Dead Boy Detectives won't fall into the "canceled too soon" category and instead find the same level of popularity compared to Wednesday, even if it takes more than one season to get there.
