The surprise indie hit Dead Cells released in August of 2018 to almost universal praise. While the game has gotten several free updates since then, this will be the first expansion containing paid content.
Dead Cells has been described as being in the "roguevania" genre, meaning that it has elements of both Rogue-like and Metroidvania games. Much like other Rogue-like titles, the game incorporates procedurally-generated maps, but it also retains the action-adventure and exploration gameplay from the Metroidvania genre. Players are tasked with exploring dungeons, killing enemies, and collecting different kinds of upgrades and weapons to assist in their journey. Players can also collect a material called "cells" which will allow them to access permanent upgrades, but, much like the best games of 2018.
Rock Paper Shotgun reports the new Dead Cells DLC will launch on February 11th for $5. The DLC is titled The Bad Seed and will give players access to all-new areas of the map: The Arboretum, The Swamp, and The Heart of the Swamp. There will also be new enemies who are designed to better pair with these new map designs and aesthetics. Instead of being an extension to the ending of the game, The Bad Seed will instead add new areas towards the beginning to give players more variety while playing. Because of this, the boss at the end of The Bad Seed will be on par (difficulty-wise) with The Concierge boss from the base game. Check out the new Dead Cells DLC trailer below:
There have been a few updates over the course of Dead Cells' lifespan, but the only one that has changed the game as dramatically as The Bad Seed was the Rise of the Giant DLC. This free update added in all-new areas, new boss battles, and, most interestingly, different endings for the game. This update allowed players to face off against the Giant, who reveals some very personal information about the protagonist, and then forces them to eventually duel against the Collector.
Dead Cells has proven to be one of the most interesting and innovative indie games in recent gaming history. The combination of different kinds of video game mechanics and genres has given fans an experience with a lot of replay value. Dead Cells has also given players tons of free content over the last year, so offering them The Bad Seed for only $5 doesn't seem like a lot to ask.
