Ryan Reynolds Explained How Wolverine Is Alive In Deadpool 3

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman acting out Deadpool 3 in teaser video

Given that Wolverine died in Logan, many have questioned how exactly he can star alongside Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine including Hugh Jackman himself. Jackman then took to social media alongside his co-star and best frenemy, Ryan Reynolds, to answer this question "how is Wolverine still alive?" The result was the video below, in which the "explanation" is inexplicably drowned out by Wham!'s "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," leaving it up to the viewer to discern the message through the actors' animated gesticulations.

The tongue-in-cheek rug-pull was not devoid of one valuable tidbit, however, as Reynolds stated before being drowned out by Wham! that the events of Logan are still canon, and Deadpool 3 movie won't touch them. Thankfully, Jackman himself elaborated in an interview with SiriusXM, via MCU's new rules surrounding timelines, that Wolverine can simultaneously be alive in Deadpool 3 while remaining dead in the Logan timeline.

It's all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines. Now we can go back because, you know, it's "science". So, I don't have to screw with the Logan timeline, which was important to me. And I think probably to the fans too.

, Deadpool 3 Is A Multiverse Movie

The Wolverine that appears in Deadpool & Wolverine must have been taken from an earlier point in his timeline. This was backed up by the set photos, which have shown that the likes of Sabertooth from Fox's X-Men (2000) will also feature, suggesting that Deadpool will face off with other X-Men characters from the original X-Men timeline. All of this makes sense, given that Deadpool 3 is taking place in the middle of the MCU's Multiverse Saga.

The set photos from Deadpool 3 have also shown other variants of Deadpool will star in the movie - specifically, a long-haired and un-scarred variant, and Dogpool (who has been confirmed by Reynolds). Earlier reports have also stated that Elektra from 2003's Daredevil will be making an appearance. All of this suggests that Deadpool 3 will be fully immersed in multiversal shenanigans, which means that the Wolverine appearing in the movie could be a variant of any timeline.

Other X-Men stars rumored to appear in Deadpool 3 include X-23, Professor X, Magneto, Gambit, Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Taylor Swift's Dazzler.

Deadpool & Wolverine's Trailer Suggests A Major Theory About WolverineRyan Reynolds As Deadpool Laying Down On Dry Ground Covered By Shadow of Wolverine And His Claws In Deadpool and Wolverine

The first appearance of Hugh Jackman's returning mutant in Deadpool & Wolverine's trailer occurs in The Void - the end-of-time wasteland introduced in Loki season 1. That multiversal limbo is the prison where the TVA's pruned variants ended up, becoming victims of the time monster Alioth. Quite why Deadpool is sent to The Void by the TVA's Mr Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen) is so-far unclear, but Wolverine's presence there suggests that he is in fact a pruned variant from a different timeline to the main Fox X-Men universe.

The destroyed 20th Century Fox logo and the presence of original Pyro actor Aaron Stanford (as well as set leaks pointing to both Toad (Ray Park) and an earlier variant of Sabretooth) suggest this universe is very similar to the Fox universe Marvel fans will be familiar with. However, a promise by Hugh Jackman suggests that it can't be the actual main Fox timeline, as Marvel are keen to avoid undermining Logan's ending.

As one of the highest-rated X-Men movies, the fears that Logan's ending would either be retconned or diminished by a surprise resurrection are justified. Thankfully, this is confirmed to not be the case as per Hugh Jackman himself, who stated in an interview with The Empire Film Podcast (via CBR) that Deadpool 3 would be taking place before Logan. Specifically, this means that the Wolverine of Deadpool 3 is neither a zombie nor a resurrected version of the character.
