Thor's cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine's biggest cameos.
These cameos, combined with Thor was crying in Deadpool & Wolverine. A brief shot in the TVA showcased the God of Thunder tearfully bent over Deadpool's injured body, with many wondering if this was a hint at the future of the MCU or simply a humorous one-off reference to the multiverse. After much speculation, Marvel has revealed how this cameo was shot.
An Actor In A Motion Capture Suit Filmed Deadpool & Wolverine's Thor Cameo
Chris Hemsworth Was Not On Set During Deadpool & Wolverine's Production
This reveal came as part of Marvel's Assembled: The Making of Deadpool & Wolverine. These documentaries have become commonplace since Avengers: Endgame, with Disney+ allowing Marvel Studios to outline the production process for audience interested in behind-the-scenes footage. In the documentary for Deadpool & Wolverine, a brief shot reveals how Thor's cameo was captured.
Hemsworth's likeness as Thor was simply composited over the other actor, allowing the Norse god to have a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine...
Around 16 minutes into Assembled: The Making of Deadpool & Wolverine, Reynolds' Deadpool can be seen lying on the ground beneath another actor in a motion capture suit. This scene is evidently the Thor cameo from the movie, with Reynolds shown reaching up to touch the other actor's face. With this in mind, it is likely that - as is always the case with mo-cap - Hemsworth's likeness as Thor was simply composited over the other actor in post-production, allowing the Norse god to have a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Deadpool & Wolverine Used Footage of Chris Hemsworth From Thor: The Dark World
The composite of Hemsworth was also revealed to have come from Thor: The Dark World. This was somewhat evident when watching Deadpool & Wolverine, as Thor's crying scene looked very similar to the scene from Thor 2 in which Loki fakes his own death. Hemsworth commented on the use of this footage in Deadpool & Wolverine shortly after the movie was released, telling Comicbook.com that:
“It’s really cool. You kind of forget and be like, ‘Oh, cool! I’m part of the team. They’re talking about me!’ when I’m not in it. I mean, that whole world is really cool to be a part of, and any time each other… I think it’s what makes it all really cool is the interconnected nature of it.”
As evident, Thor's cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine was a mixture of pre-recorded footage from Thor 2 and motion capture work on set. Regardless of how it was filmed, Hemsworth's comments bring to light one of the best aspects of the MCU. With such a vast history of films to draw upon and the progression of motion-capture technology, the MCU has become sprawling enough to allow Deadpool & Wolverine to effortlessly blend with the wider universe, making for a cameo-filled, Easter egg-infused story that connects Marvel's entire cinematic journey.
