Rob Liefeld is Bidding a Final Farewell to Deadpool

Liefeld first announced in February that he would be “retiring from Deadpool with one last story. He will be turning 57 this year, and said that, although his eyes and hands are still strong, he wants to finish up his time on the character with “the best effort I can muster.” By the sound of it, Deadpool Team-Up promises to deliver on that with all the “loveable insanity and classic action” that Liefeld has brought to other projects. Speaking on this final project, Liefeld said:

“Everyone has that one comic with that obscure character that they always wanted more of. I, myself, have several of these and I pulled them from relative obscurity from the deepest corners of the Marvel Universe and placed them next to Deadpool, right at the center of an all new, cataclysmic adventure! This is some wonderfully weird stuff and I’m so excited to share it with the world. I promise you some familiar Marvel faces and take them to brand new places. Deadpool Team-Up is the most fun I’ve had in years! I’d like to thank C.B. Cebulski and Mark Basso for making this a great experience!”

Deadpool Team-Up arrives more than three decades after Liefeld and writer Fabian Nicieza first introduced Deadpool in 1990’s New Mutants #98. In his first appearance, Wade Wilson was very different from the wisecracking, fourth-wall-breaking anti-hero he’d later become. He was a much more straightforward mercenary looking to collect a bounty on his future bestie Cable’s head. It’s commonly accepted among fans that Wade Wilson’s Deadpool is heavily based on Slade Wilson’s Deathstroke from DC Comics. Liefeld himself has pushed back against this, though he has itted he drew inspiration from G.I. Joe’s Snake Eyes.

Deadpool Has Been a Big Figure in Liefeld's Long Career

Deadpool Team-Up Cover 2

Liefeld has come and gone from Marvel Comics over the years, including when he left in 1992 to co-found Image Comics with other Marvel creators. But the prolific writer and artist has returned to contribute many Deadpool stories for the last 34 years. His most recent contributions have been the 2022 miniseries Deadpool: Bad Blood, and its 2023 sequel, Deadpool: Badder Blood, as well as last year’s Deadpool: Seven Slaughters one-shot.

Over the years, Rob Liefeld has become one of the most controversial figures in the comics industry. He’s undeniably made significant contributions, such as co-founding Image and co-creating the character Cable with writer Louise Simonson. However, he’s also garnered criticism for his artwork, which emphasizes big muscles, bigger guns, and women who look like pin-up models. He’s also made controversial comments and gotten into a number of public spats with other comics creators.

The writer and artist will recount the highs and lows of his career with Robservations, a memoir that will be published in 2025. But before that, Rob Liefeld will bid adieu to his most famous creation with one last Deadpool story this summer.

Deadpool Team-Up #1 will be available August 28 from Marvel Comics.
