The preview for Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #5 – written by Jay Kristoff with art by Tirso – shows the fiery introduction of Wintergreen to the fantasy Elseworlds setting. In just its first handful of issues, the alternate universe limited series has been a Deathstroke fan’s dream, and this version of the character’s lore will be adding one of his classic colleagues.

The addition of Deathstroke’s oldest friend from the deadly assassin's earliest days in DC history makes the Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter series a true celebration of his lore, giving one of his first ing characters a total superhero makeover. Wintergreen, or William Randolph Wintergreen, appeared alongside Deathstroke in his first appearance in Marv Wolfman and George Pérez’s The New Teen Titans #2. 5 Things I'm Excited to See in Deathstroke's New GAME OF THRONES Status Quo
I'm calling it: the Deathstroke-centric story and sequel to Tom Taylor's Dark Knights of Steel is already one of the best comic series of 2024.
Throughout DC Comics’ various retcons, Wintergreen has been featured in the role of a friend, associate, and even a mentor to Deathstroke. As the villain turned antihero takes on an even more a formidable Iron Man-like ally could be just what he needs to survive Allwinter.
Wintergreen Could Provide The Help Deathstroke Needs On His Viking Quest
Knights of Steel: Allwinter #5 – The Miniseries' Penultimate Issue
Since the new preview shows Wintergreen swiftly taking out the zombie swarm, Deathstroke’s oldest friend could prove to be his best ally yet to navigate the frozen kingdom ruled by the universe’s medieval take on Mr. Freeze. In a somewhat disappointing twist in Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #4, a team-up between Deathstroke and Batman was cut short by Bruce’s inability to withstand the icy journey without the help of the sun and his Kryptonian powers. With the character’s hardcore armor that seemingly helps him in the frozen land, Wintergreen might be an even stronger ally for Deathstroke than Batman.
As his regular side character takes on a prominent and powerful new role, Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter proves to be an excellent celebration and exploration of Deathstroke's lore.
While one of 2024’s best comics builds to its epic conclusion, Deathstroke and his child companion will need all the they can get to restore the Green. With Wintergreen’s major upgrade in the alternate universe story, he could end up being the bridge that takes Viktor Fries’ terrifying everlasting winter to the young Swamp Thing saving their medieval world. As his regular side character takes on a prominent and powerful new role, Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter proves to be an excellent celebration and exploration of Deathstroke's lore, giving this DC Elseworlds tale its own Iron Man equivalent.
Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #5 will be available November 20, 2024 from DC Comics.
