The latest episode of ScreenRant’s The Better Sister. The thriller series is based on a novel of the same name by Alafair Burke, and tells the story of estranged sisters Nicky and Chloe who come together after Chloe’s husband is killed. Elizabeth Banks plays Nicky in the series, and Jessica Biel plays Chloe.
Chloe’s son, Ethan Mcintosh, is played by Maxwell Acee Donovan, who is a veteran of TV and film. Donovan played an important recurring character, Nate, in That ‘90s Show, and is also known for his work as Wesley in Gabby Duran & The Unsittables. Despite the fact that he has largely appeared in projects with a lighter tone, Donovan was dubbed a highlight of the new series by ScreenRant’s The Better Sister review.
As with other episodes of Debunking AI (check out Love, Death + Robots fame), Donovan reviewed the answers that an AI chatbot generated about his personal and professional lives. The segment is not only a way to get to know Donovan better, but it also features plenty of discussion about his turn as Ethan in The Better Sister. Watch the whole piece, above, or read below for some highlights first.
AI And Maxwell Acee Donovan Discuss Ethan In The Better Sister
Ethan Was “A Wholly New, Deeper, And More Emotionally Complex Character” For Donovan
The chatbot didn’t get off to a great start when it came to Prime Video's The Better Sister, identifying Ethan Mcintosh as the 17-year-old son of Chloe and Adam. “That is almost right,” Donovan said, adding that, “I’m also the son of Nicky.” When asked to describe Ethan in one word, however, the chatbot got closer with “conflicted”. “That’s definitely on my list of one words,” the actor shared, adding, “I would also maybe say ‘underwater.’’
The chatbot also tried to offer the scene that was hardest for Donovan to film. “‘Maxwell Acee Donovan found the most challenging scene to film to be one where Ethan confronts his emotions under pressure, requiring deep emotional vulnerability and focus,’’ Donovan read. “I feel like they described a lot of the scenes in the show,” he replied, “[but] they’re pretty spot on.” “Although,” he shared, “second hardest, or maybe hardest, was, I had three scenes where I had to eat about 14 cronuts in one sitting, and that was tough.”
Donovan did agree with AI when the chatbot said no prior role prepared him for playing Ethan because, “it’s a wholly new, deeper, and more emotionally complex character than anything he’s tackled before.” “All right, AI,” he said, “That’s pretty solid.”
What Did AI Get Right About Maxwell Acee Donovan?
“I Actually Wanted To Be A Professional Cheetah Rider”
AI’s knowledge of Donovan’s life was not the most accurate, either. It stated that his first acting role was on Bunk’d where he played “a kid involved in the underground candy trade.” While Donovan joked that “Actually, I think that that was the prior role that best prepared me for this one,” he corrected the chatbot, saying “I think my first [role] was on this movie called Good Kids. It was the first role I ever even auditioned for and it was Young Plymouth Rock who was a mailbox-toting rebel, so that was fun.”
Donovan also did not want to grow up to be an archaeologist like his mother, like the chatbot said. Instead, he shared, “I actually wanted to be a professional cheetah rider, but I had outgrown the weight limit by the age of six. Then, I turned to paleontology, which was similar to archaeology, but that was actually before my mom dragged me to enough ruins for one lifetime. I love it, I respect it, I don’t think I can do it anymore.”
One thing the chatbot did get right was Donovan’s desire to the Marvel Cinematic Universe–and it even correctly stated that he wanted to play Nova. “That is spot on,” Donovan said. “Nova is actually literally my dream role. I have been doing personal training like five times a week–[I] ed a gym–trying to get in my superhero shape so that when they decide they want me for Nova, I'm there. I'm ready.”
