When it comes to Demon Slayer, most of the Demon Slayer Corps have some sort of tragic backstory that leads them to the fight against Muzan. Both Genya and Tanjiro, for instance, lost their families to demons. If it is not connected to something tragic, may have a link to the organization, like a relative who is or was a Hashira, as is the case for Zenitsu and Kanao.

Many of the Hashira have all lost someone to demons or were affected by demonic plots set against them or their family. Meanwhile, the Flame Hashira, Rengoku, follows in his father's footsteps. The only two Hashira without pre-existing connections to the Demon Slayer Corps or a backstory impacted by demons are the Sound Hashira and Love Hashira; however, the Sound Hashira does have a tragic, violent backstory and prior training to benefit this line of work. Mitsuri, though, lived a normal life, one unscathed by demons, prior to ing the corps, making her a rather exceptional character.

Every Hashira Backstory Ends In Bloodshed, Except One

Mitsuri Did Not Become A Demon Slayer For Vengeance Or Justice

Before becoming a Hashira, Mitsuri lived with her loving family and searched for a husband. However, the man she was arranged to marry rejected her for her quirks -- unnatural hair color, extreme strength, and voracious appetite. This rejection put Mitsuri in a deep depression, one where she hid her natural talents, restricted what she ate, and changed how she looked in hopes of becoming someone's dream girl. In due time, however, she realizes there is nothing wrong with who she is, and she deserves a partner who loves her for her.

This is perhaps one of the most relatable characters in Demon Slayer because her backstory is so grounded, one that could realistically still happen today. What makes Mitsuri's backstory stand out even more is that her motivations are not rooted in vengeance or a sense of justice at first. Initially, she s just to find a husband who could accept her, thinking the Demon Slayer Corps would be more accepting of a woman of her strength and that there would be someone even stronger than her.

The irony about Mitsuri is that she is stronger than most of the Corps, ascending the ranks to Hashira -- the strongest Demon Slayers. Mitsuri learning to love herself and find a group of people who value her is heartwarming. It's something many people can relate to and hope to achieve for themselves. While she eventually finds a group who value her for all of her strengths, her pursuit of a husband takes a backseat since Mitsuri finds something she's genuinely amazing at. She's found a way to use her talents to help others.

While the other Hashira have personal motives to stop Muzan, Mitsuri is a woman who likely could've gone her whole life without getting mixed up with the Demon Slayers. However, Mitsuri chooses a life with major risks. She could have also left the Demon Slayer Corps at any moment, but Mitsuri sticks with it, especially once she realizes she could make a genuine difference. Mitsuri is the most relatable and underrated Hashira in Demon Slayer, and she is proof that anyone can step up to make a difference.
