Demon's Souls, originally a FromSoftware game released in 2009, is one of the only true exclusives to the PlayStation 5 thus far in a remake from developer Bluepoint Games (with assistance from SIE Japan Studio).
The return of Demon's Souls has been heralded as a great entry into the Soulsborne genre, with critics praising the way Bluepoint Games managed to preserve the identity of the now-dated game while improving on some of its qualities that wouldn't have aged well otherwise. At its core, Demon's Souls' ties to those beloved concepts has endeared it to veterans while newcomers have found its overhauled graphics and smoother combat depiction a welcoming entry point.
One element that Bluepoint Games overhauled significantly is the Demon's Souls character creation system, which, with its many distinct combinations and newfound flexibility, was always going to begin spawning nightmares sooner rather than later. IGN's Brian Altano took to Twitter to share his Demon's Souls Shrek creation, illustrating the fact that as soon as players get their hands on advanced character creation systems, creativity will soon follow. Altano also challenged his followers to show their own depictions of Shrek in Demon's Souls, though replies have largely been a mix of praise and horror at what has been created.
While this depiction of Demon's Souls Shrek looks like it has been mixed with the Handsome Squidward meme, it's a fair attempt that tries to lend a bit of suaveness to the swamp ogre. Given the fact that Demon's Souls character creation is now something that offers players way more options in its remake, it won't be surprising to see even more interesting eldritch abominations in the future.
Fans are still in the early days of current generation consoles in PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and with the landscape shifting so much, it's unclear where gaming heads in the coming years. For that reason, Demon's Souls Shrek is a welcome addition to the roster of character creation mishaps in gaming history, showcasing that the more things change, the more things will remain the same when players get their hands on the fancy new technology offered by more powerful consoles.
