The store listing for the PlayStation 5 Demon's Souls remaster reveals that there will be a bonus weapon available for those who pre-order the game. Demon's Souls recently got a new gameplay trailer at this week's PS5 showcase event, along with confirmation that it will release on the same day as the next-gen console.
This is not the first time that the Souls games have offered weapons as pre-order bonuses, but the practice is still uncommon for the franchise. Dark Souls 2 had a variety of weapon and shield combinations that came as part of its Black Armor Weapons Pack. Players that pre-ordered it were given the chance to use some fairly advanced weapons from the beginning of the game. Those same weapons, however, could be purchased from in-game merchants as well.
The pre-order bonus weapon in Demon's Souls is a new addition to the game called the Reaper Scythe. As Reddit and there is some confusion regarding how exactly the pre-order bonus will work, depending on whether the player is ordering the digital edition or not. It's also not clear why it was removed from the official store page. The description for the Reaper Scythe reads as follows:
"Once wielded by sorcerers who commanded the spirits of the dead. A pole weapon with a curved blade on one end that is so sharp that they say it can sever your soul from your body. The Reaper Scythe can mow down many targets in a single blow but is difficult to handle and requires both strength and dexterity to use."
This would be the first of the Elden Ring, about which very little is known. The change in studios likely explains the unorthodox inclusion of a pre-order bonus item, but it also has some fans worried about whether the Demon's Souls remake will maintain the feel of the original.
Demon's Souls' intriguing pre-order bonus will add a unique weapon option to the game, which seems more focused on new players than old fans. Many players who pick up Demon's Souls will likely have missed the previously obscure title because of its PlayStation 3 exclusivity. The promise of a powerful pre-order weapon could be quite enticing to newcomers, while those well versed in the original game are likely looking to keep the experience as close to how they it as possible.
Demon's Souls will be released on PlayStation 5 on November 12th, 2020.
