WARNING! Potential spoilers ahead for Destro #5Destro is going to war with Cobra Commander as his self-titled miniseries draws to a close, bringing all the villains of G.I. Joe together ahead of the new Energon Universe ongoing series launching in November. The arms monger has been put through the wringer so far, but he’ll be facing his greatest challenge yet as the Destro series reaches its exciting climax.

Released via CBR, the preview for Destro #5 by Dan Watters, Andrei Bressan, and Adriano Lucas teases a major conclusion for the Energone Universe miniseries. With Destro believed to be dead, Tomax and Xamot have taken control of MARS Industries, and the Crimson Twins are looking to form an alliance with Cobra Commander.

As it turns out, the news of Destro’s death appears to have been greatly exaggerated, as the Scottish Laird arrives on the scene to take control of his company back from the Twins. Thus, the stage is set for an epic confrontation, with multiple parties vying for control of the global arms market and the valuable power source known as Energon.

Villains constantly attempting to stab each other in the back has been a long-running theme in the G.I. Joe franchise. The classic continuity saw Destro constantly scheming to wrest control of Cobra away from the Commander, so the two coming to blows in the new continuity sets up their eternal dynamic for the Energon Universe. The two came to an uneasy alliance during the Cobra Commander miniseries, when the Commander offered the stores of Energon he recently acquired from the Dreadnoks to power Destro’s new Battle Android Troopers.

In his own miniseries, Destro has been fending off attacks from an unknown assailant. At first, he believed it to be the work of Tomax and Xamot, leading to an all-out war between MARS and the Crimson Twins’ Extensive Enterprises. However, Destro #4 revealed Destro’s enemy to be a new version of Overkill, an A.I. developed by Astoria Cartlon-Ritz of Hybrid Technologies to eliminate world threats before they happen. After an attack by Astoria in her disguise as Chameleon, Destro went into hiding, working with General Flagg and the U.S. government to uncover the true identity of his attacker.

But now that Destro has revealed himself to be alive and well, readers can expect an all-out war to close out the Destro series. Given what fans know about November’s G.I. Joe #1 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, and Jordie Bellaire, all the parties currently fighting in the pages of Destro will eventually come together under the banner of Cobra Commander, but how long those alliances last in the Energon Universe remains to be seen.
