Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Original Sin episode 3 and Dexter: New Blood. Now that new twist to Dexter's first victim, Nurse Mary. As the show continues, it will have even more chances to rewrite the beginning of Dexter Morgan's story, and it will also have a chance to rewrite a controversial part of New Blood's story.

Dexter: New Blood was controversial in a number of ways. While it was better than the lumberjack ending of Dexter, many fans felt unsatisfied with Dexter's death at Harrison's hand. One of its more surprising controversies, however, didn't have anything to do with Dexter's time in Iron Lake, New York, but rather his time in Miami in the original series. New Blood introduced a subtly massive retcon that also created a huge plot hole, and Original Sin now has the chance to fix it all three years later.

Dexter: Original Sin Can Ignore Or Double Down On New Blood's M99 & Ketamine Retcon

Original Sin Has To Choose To Make Either M99 Or Ketamine Dexter's Canon Tranqulizer

In the original show, Dexter almost always subdued his victims with an injection of M99, a powerful animal tranquilizer. There's an entire episode dedicated to explaining how Dexter got his hands on it, and how he circumvented the DEA's restrictions on the drug. Dexter: New Blood, however, retroactively changed the drug Dexter used from M99 to ketamine, another type of sedative. It seems like a minor shift, but New Blood's ketamine retcon actually had some far-reaching implications for the sequel show, as it was how Angela (Julia Jones) discovered that Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher.

Now, Original Sin finally has a chance to decide between ketamine and M99. Dexter is quickly finding his footing as a serial killer, and he'll likely begin implementing some kind of tranquilizer in his next few kills. When that happens, Original Sin can either use M99 as the original series did, or it can reconfirm New Blood's use of ketamine. The prequel series will have to make a decision either way, as it simply can't avoid explaining how Dexter started using tranquilizers. As the first addition to the Dexter franchise since New Blood, whichever one Original Sin chooses will become official canon.

Dexter: Original Sin's Patrick Bateman References Hint At Keeping Dexter's M99 Drug Choice

Dexter ed As Patrick Bateman, M.D. To Buy M99 In The Original Series

Vince Masuka (Alex Shimizu) holds up a fake ID with Dexter's face and the name Patrick Bateman in Dexter: Original Sin episode 3

Luckily, there's already one major hint at how Original Sin will handle the debate between ketamine and M99. In Original Sin episode 3, Dexter began using the alias Patrick Bateman, which is the name of the fictional serial killer in American Psycho. He had Masuka (Alex Shimizu) print him a fake ID with the name, and he also used it with Tony Ferrer, his second victim. Patrick Bateman is also the name Dexter used to circumvent the DEA's restrictions on the distribution of M99 in the original series, which seems to suggest that Original Sin will stick with the original drug.

There is also a chance that Original Sin could solve the debate between M99 and ketamine entirely. The prequel show could switch back to M99 and then offer an explanation for why Angela's search in New Blood connected the Bay Harbor Butcher to ketamine. M99 is often referred to as etorphine, and it's chemically similar to ketamine, so Original Sin could introduce the idea that Miami Metro simply mistook etorphine for ketamine during the initial Bay Harbor Butcher investigation. That would, ironically, retroactively remove New Blood's ketamine retcon. Dexter: Original Sin could make the franchise more cohesive than it has been for three years.
