Dexter: Original Sin Season 1, Episode 3 Reveals That Dexter's Second Kill Was Tony Ferrer

Dexter pretends he's someone else to lure Ferrer into a trap

Following Dexter's first kill of Nurse Mary in the Dexter: Original Sin premiere, the young vigilante serial killer finds his next target in "Handsome" Tony Ferrer. Ferrer was a loan shark who loaned a large amount of money to a Cuban immigrant named Rene, who used to be a busboy at a local Miami restaurant that Angel Batista frequents. The entire bar toasts to Rene's memory, who died by suicide after Ferrer came to his house demanding his money. In the process, Ferrer fired a stray bullet that killed Rene's mom, Carla Carballo.

After Dexter hears Angel's story, he discovers that Ferrer is still out there because the Miami PD hasn't been able to nail him down on specific charges. After setting his sights on him at the end of episode 2 while Miami Metro is focused on saving a judge's young son, Dexter makes with Ferrer and poses as a desperate person looking to buy clothes for a job interview named Patrick Bateman (a clear American Psycho reference). Dexter uses a fake ID that Masuka makes for him to borrow $500 bucks from Ferrer before killing him at the end of episode 3.

How Dexter Killing Tony Ferrer Foreshadows His Future Killing Method

Dexter's approach to Ferrer shows an evolution toward his signature ritual

Dexter (Patrick Gibson) smirking while wearing a face shield in Dexter: Original Sin

In the original series, Dexter typically uses a sedative to render his targets unconscious before tying them to a table with his signature tape. Since Dexter is quite young and full of energy in Dexter: Original Sin, he's impressively able to subdue Ferrer through sheer force alone, making him out after putting him in a headlock. Later, when Dexter has Ferrer taped up, he hits him in the cheek with a ball which mirrors the cut he gives his victims to take their blood slides. This appears to be a slight nod to Dexter's eventual kill ritual as his methodology forms and evolves in Dexter: Original Sin.
