With Michael C. Hall's television serial killer set to return in Dexter: Resurrection, showrunner Clyde Phillips explains how the actor had an essential role in greenlighting the sequel and expanding the franchise alongside prequel series Dexter: Original Sin.

As Dexter's first kills are finally being unveiled following Dexter: Original Sin's premiere, Phillips sat down with Screen Rant to explain how Hall's appetite for more stories opened up the opportunities for the future. He revealed that Hall was the individual to kick off the idea of continuing Dexter's story beyond the events of New Blood, even reaching out to give him a call. After the Dexter star approved of Phillips' pitch, followed by Showtime and Paramount, it led to the greenlighting of Resurrection as Original Sin's first season was filming. Read his response below:

It's a whole new show. Michael Hall called me and said, "you know what? I've got Dexter in my bones. Clyde, you've got Dexter in your bones. Let's keep going. Can you figure it out? How can I have survived what happened in the finale?"

My team and I figured it out, pitched it to Michael. He loved it. Pitched it to Showtime and Paramount. "They're not going to say no to this. I mean, it's their biggest show!" And we start shooting that in a month. So, all while shooting Original Sin, we were writing Resurrection.

Despite the timing of the writing and filming of each show, Phillips itted that there was little crossover between Original Sin and Resurrection. Check out the showrunner's clarification below:

Other than the fact that Dexter is who he is, they're separate entities.

Hall Will Still Play A Role In The Prequel

While there may be no significant connections between Dexter: Original Sin and Dexter: Resurrection at least within their premiere seasons, there is still one connective thread in the form of Hall. Alongside reprising his role in the sequel series, Hall is acting as a producer and narrator for the prequel.

Furthermore, while Phillips ruled out any crossovers between Dexter: Resurrection and Dexter: Original Sin in their current forms, potential future seasons could pave the way for cases that cross over between their settings.
