In Diablo 4, players can test their strength in a new dungeon challenge called The Artificer's Pit. You can now become stronger than ever by upgrading your gear pieces to improve their existing affixes, but to do so, you must be prepared to delve deep into this new dungeon crawl. The Artificer's Pit is one of the deadliest challenges in Diablo IV and can truly test the limits of your character's power.
Before Season 4, you could simply hone your gear at the blacksmith five times, boosting each affix by the same amount. Now, however, with the introduction of the Artificer's Pit, players can upgrade their gear up to 12 times, providing additional benefits that could never be achieved. With the addition of this new system, combined with legendary pieces now dropping with Greater Affixes, players can scale their power up to meet the challenges of level 200 encounters.

Helltides have been an endgame staple in Diablo 4, but Loot Reborn has introduced several new mechanics that returning players need to master.
How To Find The Artificer's Pit In Diablo 4's World Tier IV
Items Need To Unlock The Pit
The Artificer's Pit becomes available once you have reached Diablo 4's World Tier IV: Torment and have completed the priority quest to complete at least a tier 45 nightmare dungeon. This is where enemies begin to break past level 100, requiring a decently leveled character to take on the challenge. Playing with friends will also speed up the process, as you can spread out and clear the dungeons faster.
It is recommended to reach at least level 80 before soloing The Artificer's Pit.
To open The Artificer's Pit, you will need to acquire rune shards, as each run requires three. These can be found in various places, such as Whisper Caches, Helltides, Legion Events, Nightmare Dungeons, and World Bosses. Once you have fully leveled your character and have found the right gear, you will be ready to tackle this new dungeon challenge.
How To Use The Artificer's Pit
Upgrade Your Perfect Gear
To make your perfect gear even better, you will need the materials from The Artificer's Pit to engage with masterworking in Diablo 4. Every piece of gear can be upgraded up to 12 times, which will improve the gear's corresponding affixes by a considerable amount. This new upgrading system is why The Artificer's Pit is so alluring, as it's the only place where masterwork materials can drop.
Tiers |
Crafting Material Acquired |

These dungeons are similar to Diablo 4's Nightmare Dungeons but differ in that there are no revives. Instead, the challenge has a time limit, and each death will detract more seconds from the timer. There are typically no objectives within The Artificer's Pit either outside of slaying enemies, whereas Nightmare Dungeons often contain certain mechanics.
Each masterwork material can be used to upgrade gear pieces by increasing their affixes by 5%. Obducite upgrades gear from 1-4, Ingolith upgrades gear from 5-8, and Neathiron upgrades gear from 9-12. At ranks 4, 8, and 12, a random affix will be boosted by 25%. Masterworking your most coveted gear is one of the final steps to becoming the strongest you can be in Diablo 4.
