From the very first cutscene in Diablo IV, the Fallen Horadrim Elias has brought danger into Sanctuary by bringing Lilith to life, making him a dangerous enemy that players must beat in the story. Elias uses magic as an extremely powerful spellcaster boss that players will face multiple times throughout the game. The second in command to the Daughter of Hatred will not be defeated easily, so players should be ready for grueling battles.

There are three instances where players will have to fight Elias, two of which occur in the main story. The Act 3 quest, "Piercing the Veil," and the Act 5 mission, "On the Precipice," has players face the fallen member of the Horadrim, but the first boss fight has players take on Elias more than once. The last time players might encounter Elias is as the boss of a Capstone Dungeon leading to World Tier 4 in Diablo 4, where he is referred to as "Hatred's Remnant."

How to Defeat Elias Boss In Diablo 4

Diablo 4 Elias, Master of the Triune Boss Fight in Act 3 of Story

Act 3 sees players travel to Elias' Chambers to confront the "Pale Man," a boss battle in Diablo 4 with three phases that progress the story. During the first phase, Elias only fires blood projectiles at the player, which can be easily dodged using a character's Evade. Almost acting as an Elite enemy at this point, players that defeat Elias here will see blood petals fall that lead to a cutscene that unlocks a door deeper into the area.

The first time players fight Elias, he is immortal and cannot be killed, only stopped in three different battles throughout the quest during Act 3.

Elias sits ready for another battle past the door, summoning at least two Champions of Lilith to fight alongside him. The boss still fires projectiles but also creates pentagrams of blood on the floor that explode after a short time. Players must focus on defeating the Champions quickly while avoiding Elias' spells to have room to deal damage to the main boss.

Taking down Elias here doesn't put him down for good, though, as players continue through the Inner Gardens to the Halls of the Master. Yet another fight occurs here, with Elias conjuring two Supplicants to protect him from attacks until players kill them, with more being summoned at a later point in Diablo 4. Elias still uses all of their previous attacks and even more basic enemies until players eventually take him down.

How to Beat Elias, The Fallen Horadrim in Act 5 of Diablo 4

Diablo 4 Elias, The Fallen Horadrim Act 5 End of Boss Fight Cutscene

While players won't get a chance to take down Elias for good in Act 3, he will return in Diablo 4's Act 5 with the same attacks as before, encouraging players to deal with his summoned enemies before dishing out significant damage. Until players reach the first tick of his health bar, Elias will use the attacks from the final phase of the Act 3 fight. Supplicants, Champions, and basic enemies all serve to overwhelm players in this battle just like they did before.

The best classes for fighting Elias are Necromancer, Rogue, and Sorcerer since each Skill Tree of these character options has either Minions that can deal with summoned enemies of the Fallen Horadrim or long-range attacks that deal damage away from the boss' AoE spells.

However, lowering Elias' health enough causes him to unleash large red veins on the ground as a brand new attack. Players that stand in these veins have their health drained, so they should use movement abilities to get to safe places in the boss arena. Long-range attacks work well against Elias, especially as these veins cover more and more space as the boss' health gets lower.

Staying outside the large Area of Effect (AoE) spells that Elias casts and dealing with his minions allows players to slowly deplete the boss' health, leading to the eventual and final defeat of Lilith's servant in Diablo 4.

How to Beat Elias, Hatred's Remnant in Diablo 4

Diablo 4 Elias, Hatred's Remnant Boss from World Tier 4 Capstone Dungeon

The most dangerous version of Elias, no doubt, comes from the World Tier 4 Capstone Dungeon in Diablo 4, which players should only attempt if they are confident in their abilities or are at least level 70 or higher. Some attacks from the boss return from the main story, but this should be considered a completely new and improved opponent for the most part. Much like the dungeon to get into World Tier 3, Elias is best fought with friends in a co-op party.

Elias Move List

Attack

Description

Cursed Fire

Elias creates a dark red outline of a spell before shooting an eruption of fire ahead of himself. This move is done twice, with the second being nearly impossible to avoid immediately after the first.

Rain of Blood

Similar to the boss battles in the story, Elias conjures large red circles quickly in the arena that explode, killing most characters instantly. Small gaps in between the circles are the only way to avoid this attack, along with specific defensive skills.

Rain of Poison

Almost the same as Rain of Blood, this time with green circles instead of red. While still incredibly dangerous, this attack does slightly less damage, instead causing a character's health to slowly drain over a short period of time with a poisonous effect.

Denizens of Hell

Elias summons several of Lilith's most powerful demons, including:

  • Fallen - called upon after Rain of Blood, mostly basic enemies that are summoned in great numbers
  • Succubi - projectile shooting enemies that can deal large damage from elemental attacks from afar, usually summoned when Elias does an attack from the center of the arena
  • Balrog - shoot fire that rapidly causes damage to a character by burning them, summoned after Elias performs their red vein attack along the ground

Elias has several attacks that players could be killed in one hit, so characters need to watch the cooldown of their skills and Evade during this fight. Abilities that can Stun or make enemies Vulnerable are incredibly useful here since Elias relies on Denizens of Hell to protect himself. Diablo 4 players looking for the best gear for this fight should bring Legendary or Unique gear with Thorns to help contend with many enemies.

Challenging Elias in the Capstone Dungeon remains a significant challenge even after beating Diablo 4's Story Mode. However, taking down the former Horadrim once more gives players the highest-known World Tier in the game. Every strategy used to beat Elias in Diablo IV can also be applied to other enemies, including the dangerous World Bosses that now serve as the most significant challenge after a final bout with the "Pale Man."
