Forgotten Souls are a new crafting material in Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred DLC. There are a fair amount of different ways to use them in the crafting system, and this makes finding and farming them more of a priority. However, there has been some frustration from players regarding how these are farmed, so you will want to know the best ways to get them as fast as possible.

You might be most excited about the Spiritborn class in Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred, but in order to make this class as overpowered as possible, you will need to understand how the Forgotten Souls work. It is a crucial item that is only ever found in small quantities, so use the guide below to help you find them and know how and when to use them.

How To Farm Forgotten Souls

The Right Helltide Event

Forgotten Souls are a scarce resource and one that players are hoping the developer will change at some point in the future, according to YouTuber Rob2628. You can find these items by participating in Helltides, but even then, players will have to look for them in specific places.

It may seem hard to pick the right mercenary or even unlock them in Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred, but the right choice is really based on you.

One thing you can do to up your chances of getting more Forgotten Souls per Helltide is by upping the World Tier difficulty in Diablo 4. If you have the stats to do or have an overpowered class build, Torment IV is going to be the best tier to try it on. However, they can be found at some frequency on lower tiers. Additionally, you need to contribute to the ritual to summon and defeat the Blood Maiden within the Helltide events. You can get Forgotten Souls if you do not contribute, but you get more if you contribute.

While in the Helltide events, open up smaller Tortured Gifts, as this will also give you some Forgotten Souls. Larger Tortured Gifts are fine as well, but they will give you the same amount of souls and cost more to open.

While the ritual is ongoing, you can run off and go get the Tortured Gifts, before returning to the Maiden for the final blow. All of these things will only give you a few Forgotten Souls each, but you can do it over and over again without much effort and even go to town and return back to get more while the event is ongoing. This makes it a very efficient way to get the Forgotten Souls you need for your gear.

You can get it in other places as well, but it is not going to be as efficient. You can find them in Spoils of Materials chests in Infernal Hordes, but doing this takes a lot of time. If you fully complete the Undercity of Kurast, you can get Forgotten Souls but using more Tributes will not increase the number you receive. Additionally, if you clear the Dark Citadel, you can get more, but again this is quite a time-heavy investment.

Lastly, you can also get them from bartering with Mercenaries, but this will require you to have Pale Marks to trade for them. This is something you can do if you are in a pinch, but it should not be your first option.

How To Use Forgotten Souls

Use As A Crafting Material

Once you have them, you will then want to know how to use them. One of their functions is to Enchant legendary items. This can be done at the Occultist, and it allows you to re-roll a single affix to get something more desirable. However, this will also require other materials. This is a mechanic that has been in place, but now Forgotten Souls will be part of the equation.

Similarly, you can now Masterwork Ancestral or Mythic Unique gear with Forgotten Souls. It is an endgame feature that will require you to go through several steps. First, you will need to temper your gear at least once, twice if it is Ancestral. Once you have the materials, you can then go to a blacksmith to start Masterworking.

If you want a non-ancestral Legendary Item Masterworked, this will not require Forgotten Souls. Forgotten Souls only apply to Ancestral & Mythic Unique items.

The lowest Masterwork Rank will require at least three Forgotten Souls, while the highest rank costs as many as fifteen. You can also reset the Masterwork Rank on any given item, which can be done by clicking on the red circle next to the rank using the recipe below:

Item

Quantity

Iron Chunks/Raw Hide

30x

Veiled Crystals

20x

Forgotten Souls

5x

Gold

5,000,000

Each rank will boost the affixes on your equipment, making them even more potent. With all the Forgotten Souls needed, you will need to make sure you are out there farming them as soon as you can in Diablo 4.
