While The Legend of Korra gave fans a lot of information on Aang and Katara's children and what happened between them, the show rarely seems to focus on Team Avatar as a whole due to the generational difference. This left fans a bit upset; the show ended up leaving them with just more unanswered questions.

Fans desperately want to know how their favorite Airbender characters turned out, what ships sailed, and where Suki is (one of the most vital Team Avatar in the fight against the Fire Nation). Luckily, the Avatar: The Last Airbender comics exist and novels continue to be written about other characters, so the hope is still on the horizon to have some of the questions answered. These particular questions, however, remain unanswered.

Updated on May 2nd, 2022 by Amanda Bruce: Despite continued releases of books and comics set within the world of Avatar, fans continue to have lingering questions from the very first series. Legend of Korra might not have answered them, but the coming live-action adaptation of The Last Airbender will also have the chance to address some of these questions. Of course, with the story set in a different medium, fans will likely see different questions raised there as well.

Did Sokka Get Married?

Sokka is one of the few in Team Avatar to seemingly have no children, so it's unclear if he ever was (or stayed) romantic with anyone following his teenage girlfriend. As far as fans know, he was last seen with Suki. But Sokka and Suki were still young where the series left them off, so it is possible that they had an unforeseen breakup between the time they were 18 and his brief appearances in Korra flashbacks.

The series never mentions if Sokka was married or even if he had children, though if he did, fans probably would've heard some sort of mention from Tenzin about his cousins.

What Happened To The Last Lion Turtle?

Aang stands in front of a lion turtle in The Last Airbender

The lion turtles play a big role in Avatar's mythology. They're the creatures that first allow Avatar Wan access to their fire. While most of the characters in Avatar believe the lion turtles all died out years ago, Aang encounters the last of the species in his series, and it swims off into the sunset.

The flying bison, however, are also seen as wiped out. Appa is thought to be the last of his kind, but a lost herd is eventually discovered, which is why the population has increased in Legend of Korra. Was the last lion turtle really the last of the species, or were there more out there? If he was the last one, is he still hanging around in Legend of Korra?

Did Jet Heal From His Seemingly Fatal Wounds?

When Aang and his friends encounter Jet and his freedom fighters, they work together against Fire Nation soldiers. Jet is, seemingly, fatally injured while fighting and never seen again in the animated series. Presumably, because the series aired on a children's network, his death didn't want to be shown on screen.

That being said, he is drawn amongst the freedom fighters in a later story in the Avatar comics, leaving some fans wondering if it was a continuity error or if he somehow survived his wounds.

What Happened To Suki?

A split image features Suki in three different outfits in the Avatar series

This leads to the next question: whatever happened to Suki? She was a member of Team Avatar and fought with them until the very end. In the comics, fans know that she became part of an elite guard that protected Zuko.

She trained new Kyoshi warriors (some of which may have been the ones who trained Asami at a young age). But it is unclear what happened to Suki herself as she's one of the Avatar characters who never makes an appearance in Korra. The show never even mentions her character.

Who Did Zuko Have Izumi With?

Zuko and Mai look at the sunset on Avatar: The Last Airbender

It seems like the writers behind The Legend of Korra just didn't want to anger any fans by confirming ships that people may or may not have wanted to happen, because they don't elaborate on who ends up with who. In the original series, Zuko has a pretty solid relationship with Mai. They bounce off each other wonderfully and seem to motivate one another in the best of ways. However, it is also known that the two break up in the comics.

Mai gets another boyfriend who betrays her trust and she dumps him. She also comments that she still loves Zuko and it is made clear to fans that Zuko still has feelings for her as well. So there is a very big possibility that the pairing got back together and had Izumi. After all, Izumi is quiet, stoic, and a bit harsh like Mai, so the pairing would make sense.

Where Are Ty Lee & Mai?

A split image features Avatar characters Ty Lee and Mai

Speaking of Mai, like Suki there is no mention of Ty Lee nor Mai in The Legend of Korra. Ty Lee became a Kyoshi Warrior at the end of The Last Airbender and was part of the group designated to protect and guard Fire Lord Zuko.

She helped the warriors learn chi-blocking and aided Suki in teaching it to new warriors in the Fire Nation. But why isn't she, nor Mai, in Korra? Mai would have confirmed the theories as to whether or not she was Izumi's mother, and Ty Lee would have been a great involvement for the Amon arc of the series.

Where Is Azula?

Azula smirks with a crown on her head in The Last Airbender

Though Fire Lord Ozai was the main antagonist of The Last Airbender, Azula definitely fit that profile more. She was incredibly problematic and just liked being evil. Many fans wanted her to go through a redemption arc, but she would never accept the opportunities she was given.

In the series, fans know that Azula got locked up for her crimes and lost herself a bit. In the comics, she is often still locked up, but occasionally has been released for specific missions. She always finds ends up back in a cell. It would have been nice to know what happened to her: did she remain in prison or did she somehow escape? Was Azula ever redeemed?

Why Is Azula The Only Firebender Who Can Produce Blue Flames?

Avatar The Last Airbender Azula Blue Fire Flames

This question is definitely more minor than the others, but it's still really interesting that Azula was the only one able to conjure up blue flames between The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Blue flames are naturally hotter than that of red or orange flames.

They produce more heat, like that of an explosion. It is a theory that Azula, as unhinged as she was, had the ability to conjure up these hotter flames due to the fact that she was just so much angrier than the rest. She wasn't more powerful, necessarily, but more wild and uncontrollable. Azula was filled with more heat through her extreme emotions.

Who Is Suyin's Father?

Suyin tilts her head to the side as she speaks in The Legend of Korra

The question of who did Toph end up with a big one. No one knew for the longest time who Lin's father was, but then fans learned that Toph had a second daughter from a different father. This left fans curious about her relationships following the original series.

In the series, Toph mentioned that Lin's father was a man named Kanto, though little information is known about him. Lin is six years older than Suyin, so in between that time, Toph had at least one other relationship. There are a lot of theories about Suyin's father and most of them revolve around Sokka. Lin is pale like her mother, while Suyin has a complexion that greatly resembles that of the water tribe, that of Sokka. Many of Suyin's kids (specifically Baatar Jr. and Huan) look very similar to Sokka when compared.

Did Sokka Ever Get His Boomerang Back?

A split image features the older and younger version of Sokka in the Avatar series

In the series finale, Sokka threw his boomerang for a final time, which saved his and Toph's life. He also lost his sword in that final battle. Both his sword and his boomerang seemed to be part of Sokka's identity as a fighter. He was a non-bender and relied heavily on his boomerang, even calling himself "the boomerang guy" on a number of occasions.

How Did Iroh The White Lotus?

Iroh stands ahead of his allies amongst smoke in The Last Airbender

One of the most mysterious aspects of Avatar is the White Lotus. Fans got to learn a little more about it in The Legend of Korra, but the process of becoming a member of the White Lotus is still a mystery. And furthermore, it is very unclear how Iroh ed them, and when. Before the death of his son, Iroh was a completely different character. He was ruthless, nearly as bad as Ozai himself.

He wanted the Fire Nation to reign supreme. So what did he do to make the White Lotus consider him a worthy member? And how much after tragedy struck did he ? Fans know he reformed his ways, but what pushed the organization to consider and trust him with their secrets?

Does Team Avatar Still Meet Up?

The older versions of Aang, Katara, Toph, Zuko, and Sokka in the Avatar books

Team Avatar were the best of friends, and a few of the key are still around by the time Korra starts: Toph, Katara, and Zuko. They all live very far from one another and live very different lives though. Katara is in the Southern Water Tribe, Zuko in the Fire Nation, and Toph lives in the Swamps.

It is unknown if the still meet up with one another and how they communicate if they still do. They may all be old in age by now, but fans see a couple of them travel, so it's entirely possible they travel to see each other as well.
