Summary

  • The Digimon universe is defined by the conflict between digital monsters and humans, with some characters originating from other dimensions.
  • Nanimon, an invader from a different dimension, has appeared in various Digimon stories and wants to conquer the World Wide Web.
  • There is evidence suggesting that Nanimon's home dimension is the same as Tamagotchi's, as both franchises are owned by Bandai and share similarities.

A Digimon from the original series has a surprising origin story. One of the basic constructs of the Digimon universe is the interplay between the real and virtual worlds that pits "digital monsters" that are capable of evolving against living, breathing humans for the safety and protection of the world.

While most characters in the story are either human or computer-based beings, there is also another particular type of character that is neither human nor virtual but rather from another dimension. Since their origins are often "unknown" or "shrouded in mystery," the inability of opponents to understand their abilities and purpose makes them a radical threat to both humans and the more traditional Digimon.

Digimon's Nanimon Actually Comes From Tamagotchi

Nanimon is the perfect example of how Tamagotchi can be reborn as Digimon. Originally debuting in Digimon Adventure (1999) as a trainer of the evil Myotismon's army, Nanimon continued showing up in subsequent Digimon stories as a minor, albeit annoying, villain. More interestingly was the fact that Nanimon was known as an "invader," that is, he was not a localized Digimon who sought to abuse the internet for his personal interests. Rather, he's from a dimension outside the internet and human reality who wants to conquer the World Wide Web for reasons unknown.

Originally, Nanimon's background was unclear, which made sense, since he was neither purely digital nor human. However, it was ultimately revealed his original name was "Oyaji." While most fans surely considered this information standard marketing, a deeper analysis shared by YouTuber Karn_EX pointed out that in Tamagotchi, there was a bearded character named "Oyajitchi," who uncannily resembles Nanimon's base form in Digimon. That is to say, all the evidence provides that Nanimon's home dimension is none other than the Digimon's sister universe in Tamagotchi.

"Sister universe" in this context refers to the fact that both Digimon and Tamagotchi are owned by the toy company Bandai, who introduced the two original electronic games at about the same time and saw the Digimon as an expansion of the Tamagotchi idea to young boys more interested in battle stories than being the primary care provider for an electronic pet.

Apparently, Oyajitchi was able to find a way to traverse the barriers between the universes and used that to invade the Digimon world, and in the process, was able to transform himself from a Tamagotchi to a Digimon without anyone being the wiser – until now. With this "discovery," the question now becomes how many other Tamagotchi have secretly invaded the Digimon dimension and whether any Digimon have crossed over into the world of the Tamagotchi.
