Disney's new Adams is set to reprise Giselle alongside a cast of fresh and familiar faces.
Disenchanted picks up ten years after the first film as Giselle swaps city life for the suburbs with her husband Robert (Patrick Dempsey) and stepdaughter Morgan (Gabriella Baldacchino). Though she tries to nestle in, Giselle is yearning for the nostalgia of her old fairy tale dwellings. When she attempts to bring it back with a spell, things go horribly wrong, transforming the sweet princess into a wicked stepmother. Idina Menzel and James Marsden return for the sequel story alongside a host of new talent like SNL alum Maya Rudolph, Community's Yvette Nicole Brown, Glee's Jayma Mays, and The Office's Oscar Nuñez.
Disney revealed the first musical number from the family film in a full-length Disenchanted trailer. Showcasing the best look at the movie yet, one of the standout moments features Nancy Tremaine (Menzel) and Prince Edward (Marsden) singing a birthday song to Giselle's baby. Check out this moment and more in the trailer below.
What to Expect from the Enchanted 2
Releasing on Disney+ on November 24th, the new musical comedy is said to feature a host of original songs from Enchanted's iconic award-winning writing duo Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. While the first film followed a standard fairy tale recipe, the sequel seems to have concocted more of an original post-happily ever after plot. It will be a race against time, with Giselle attempting to reverse a spell meant to bring a bit of Andalasia to the suburbs.
Unlike the first movie, Disenchanted will see Giselle channel her dark side. When her Andalasian magic backfires, she transforms into a typical evil stepmother. This could be a problematic move for the sequel, as most of the charm and success of the first film stemmed from Adam's comedic doe-eyed princess portrayal. Disney's gone down the route of flipping character archetypes in sequels not so successfully in the past. For instance, Cruella De Vil was reformed in 102 Dalmatians. Of course, seeing Giselle become a villain could also be quite fun. Only time will tell if Disenchanted strikes the right balance.
