Disney's Little Mermaid is one of the most beloved animated movies of all time, and it is going to be one of the latest Disney classics to be given the live-action treatment. Much like The Lion King, The Jungle Book, and Aladdin have before, Little Mermaid will be brought to life in a whole new way.
Obviously, there is a lot of pressure on the cast not to disappoint, with the re-telling of this beloved story. But Disney has put together an incredible cast, which was officially announced during its latest Investors Day. So far, seven actors have been confirmed for the movie, as well the fact the music will be created by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda. But where will people know the cast from?
Jonah Hauer-King (World On Fire)
Jonah Hauer-King will be taking on the major role of the Disney Prince, Eric. The character is one of the most important within the movie, and one that stands out massively, fighting for what he believes in, showing great ion and romance with Ariel.
This will be the biggest role of Jonah's career to date, with the promising young actor being best-known for his role on the BBC show, World On Fire, which is a war drama. As well as that, he has appeared in A Dog's Way Home alongside Bryce Dallas Howard.
Awkwafina (Jumanji: The Next Level)
Awkwafina is quickly making a name for herself within the world of television and movies after her career as a rapper and online personality. She won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for her role in The Farewell.
She also appeared in the popular movie, Jumanji: The Next Level, playing Ming Fleetfoot, and in The Little Mermaid, she will be taking on the role of Scuttle. This is going to be a change from the animated version, where Scuttle was a male, but with her comedic ability, there's no doubt she will be a hit in this role.
Daveed Diggs (Hamilton)
There's no doubt about where people best know Daveed Diggs from, which is the popular musical, Hamilton. This show is one of the greatest musicals of all time, and Daveed takes up the roles of both Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson throughout the show, bringing a lot of excitement and energy.
His incredible rapping throughout the musical makes him a perfect casting for the character of Sebastian in The Little Mermaid. He will no doubt be bringing that energy to the role, which was one of the highlights of the animated movie, and his strong relationship with Lin-Manuel Miranda should help make this character shine.
Jacob Trembley (Room)
Jacob Trembley is a young actor who is quickly making a big name for himself, having been part of some major movie and television projects. He was part of the 2015 movie adaptation Predator.
However, Jacob will be ing the cast of something a little more family-friendly with The Little Mermaid. He's going to be taking on the role of Flounder in this movie, which is a great role as Ariel's sidekick and best friend.
Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men)
Javier Bardem was a great casting decision by Disney for the role of King Triton. He's someone who has had an incredible career and will no doubt be great in this role, bringing an authoritative tone, while also being able to be warm as well.
He is best known for being involved in Skyfall, while also having worked with Disney previously in Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids)
Melissa McCarthy is one of best comedic actresses around right now, and someone who is best known for working in comedy movies such as Identity Thief. She's certainly got a lot of charisma, and that is something that will work well for her role in The Little Mermaid.
However, instead of being the character that audiences love, she will actually be the villain as she will be playing Ursula. The Sea Witch is certainly a scary and dominant villain, but she's also got a lot of personality, which is something that suits Melissa.
Halle Bailey (Grown-Ish)
Halle Bailey is going to be taking on the most important role of all, as she plays Ariel. She is obviously the lead character, becoming the popular Disney princess, and it is no doubt going to be a real breakout moment for her career.
So far, Halle is actually best known for being one half of the popular duo, Chloe x Halle, who are a popular R&B duo who are actually signed to Beyonce's label. However, she does have acting experience as well, having been in a variety of television shows, with the biggest role coming in the show Grown-Ish.
