The wonderful world of Disney is chock full of lovable characters and the stories they bring to life are enjoyed by people of all ages. From the catchy songs to heartfelt moments, Disney knows how to put together a beautiful story with memorable faces.
But just as Disney is known for their lovable and sweet characters, they're also known for their antagonists. After all, Disney can only have its happy moments after the good guys defeat the bad guys. To see which characters are some of Disney's most likable (and which are the most hated), keep reading to see who made the list.
Most Likable: Dory (Finding Nemo, Finding Dory)
Disney and Pixar came together in 2003 for Finding Nemo. The adorable flick introduced us to clown fish Marlin, his son Nemo, and their new friend, blue tang Dory. After Nemo is taken from the ocean to become a pet in a dentist's office, Marlin sets out on an epic journey to bring Nemo home. Along the way, Marlin meets Dory and the two become quick friends.
Dory has short-term memory loss, so even though she doesn't always what she's doing, she knows who her friends are. Disney goers loved Dory so much that she even got her movie in 2016.
Hated: Scar (The Lion King)
Scar isn't your typical villain. Not only is he resentful and spiteful of his successful brother but he goes on a killing spree to get what he wants. He murdered his brother Mufasa, set out a hit on his nephew Simba, and took over the Pride Lands.
Scar's hyenas are his little minions and do everything he asks. They single-handedly ruined a lush environment and drove an entire kingdom to starvation. Thankfully, Simba came to the rescue to defeat Scar, but that lion didn't have one redeeming quality.
Most Likable: Merida (Brave)
Merida was incredibly refreshing. She was the princess Disney needed after years and years of Brave came out in 2012 and told the story of a brave Scottish princess who didn't want to marry a complete stranger just to have the title of princess that was rightfully hers. Unlike other Disney princesses, Merida was an amazing archer and athlete. She went head to head with her mother but also protected her when she was at her weakest. Merida was a stand-up young woman who fought for what she believed in, even if it caused mayhem.
Hated: Lady Tremaine (Cinderella)
Cinderella was such a joy. She sang, she was kind to all living creatures, and she was a family gal. Sadly, after her father ed away, Lady Tremaine, her stepmother, became her evil stepmother. Lady Tremaine literally turned Cinderella into her slave and made her do everything she was too lazy to do.
She essentially took the house and the money that should have gone to Cinderella and took advantage of a sad situation. What's worse is that when Cinderella wanted to go to the ball, Lady Tremaine encouraged her daughters to bully and assault her. That's one cruel woman.
Most Likable: Genie (Aladdin)
Genie was much more than a fictional genie inside a lamp. He was a dear friend, a protector, and a provider. Aladdin and Abu didn't have much in life and Genie completely turned Aladdin's world around. He gave him a new title, a new look, and made it possible for Aladdin and Jasmine to actually have a shot at love. Without Genie, Aladdin would still be a "street rat." You could even say that Genie was Aladdin's personal hype-man. He was super positive and genuinely loved others. He was one of the greats.
Hated: Gaston (Beauty and the Beast)
Gaston is one of the worst villains in Disney history. He may be charming and handsome but he's also incredibly vain and misogynistic. He wants what he can't have, namely Belle. She was beautiful and self-taught; she didn't need Gaston, which made him want her more. To make matters worse, Gaston wanted to kill the Beast and got the entire city to attack him inside his own castle. If Gaston thought this brutality was going to win Belle over, he was sorely mistaken.
Most Likable: Mulan (Mulan)
Mulan is another badass princess that young Disney fans needed. She didn't wait for a man or a mystical being to save her — she saved herself. After China goes to war, Mulan dresses as a man and takes her father's position on the battlefield. She wanted to prove herself to her family and make something of herself. Her identity was eventually revealed, but she saved the entire country regardless of being shunned by the army. Mulan ended up bringing great honor to her family and became a war hero for her selflessness.
Hated: Shere Khan (The Jungle Book)
Fans can all agree that the worst, right? He tried to murder a child simply because he wasn't an animal. Mowgli was raised by wolves and was as much as an animal as the rest of them. He may have been a human but he never associated himself with other humans because he never met one before. But that didn't matter the Shere Khan. He wanted Mowgli — and whoever protected him — dead. When a cartoon Bengal tiger is scary enough to haunt your dreams, you know you did something right.
Most Likable: Elsa & Anna (Frozen)
Elsa and Anna are two of Disney's most successful princesses. Frozen did insanely well in theaters and turned Elsa and Anna Disney into icons. The sisters shared an incredible bond that overcame powerful obstacles. And while they're both individuals who have done their fair share of good and bad things, these two should be known as a strong and powerful duo. With two movies under the franchise's name, something tells us this won't be the last of the princesses of Arendelle.
Hated: Ursula (The Little Mermaid)
Ursula is the main antagonist in The Little Mermaid. As a sea witch, she wants to take over King Triton's kingdom and the easiest way to do that is to get to his favorite daughter, Ariel. Ariel would do anything to have legs so she can have her shot with Prince Eric, but Ursula makes her mission harder by taking her voice. If Ariel is unable to get Prince Eric to fall in love with her, Ursula would take away her soul and she'd become nothing more than a thing of seaweed. Ursula preys on the weak and uses dark magic to her advantage. The only things she's nice to are her eels!
