Summary

  • The new trailer for Disney's Percy Jackson and the Olympians hints at what's to come, although some important characters are missing.
  • The adaptation appears to be faithful to the source material, so viewers can expect familiar faces and storylines.
  • Despite not being shown in the promotional footage, key characters like Dionysus, Luke, and Poseidon will play major roles in the series.

Disney released a new trailer for Percy Jackson trailer also reveals Grover's (Aryan Simhadri) satyr legs, as well as the show's iteration of Ares (Adam Copeland) and Medusa (Jessica Parker Kennedy).

From what's been shown so far, it's clear this adaptation of Rick Riordan's book series is sticking closely to the source material. As such, viewers can expect more familiar faces when Percy Jackson debuts on Disney+ later this year. With Riordan's first series comprising five books, there's plenty to cover. That's not to mention the follow-up and spinoff book series, which could turn Percy Jackson into a full-fledged franchise for the streamer. There are certainly enough characters to expand upon in the Percy Jackson show. Some will show up as early as season 1, even if they aren't in the promotional footage just yet.

9 Dionysus

Stanley Tucci as Dionysus in Sea of Monsters

Disney's latest Percy Jackson teaser shows plenty of shots of Camp Half-Blood, and it even features a voiceover that appears to be from Chiron (Glynn Turman), one of Percy's mentors at the demigod training facility. Missing from the action is Dionysus, the prickly director of Camp Half-Blood. The Greek god of Wine, who's also dubbed Mr. D, Dionysus is forced to oversee the demigods as a punishment from Zeus. He appears in all five books in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, so he'll be a major player in the adaptation.

After being portrayed by Stanley Tucci in the Percy Jackson movies, Dionysus will be played by Jason Mantzoukas in the Disney+ show. Viewers can anticipate an early entrance from the character. Dionysus will be among those to welcome Percy to Camp Half-Blood (even if he's calling him "Peter Johnson" as he does). Needless to say, his absence from the footage only means that fans will need to wait a little longer to see him in all his grumpy glory.

7 Luke Castellan

Luke in Percy Jackson - Lightning Thief

Luke Castellan plays a big role in the Percy Jackson books, but his importance isn't revealed until later in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Because of this, it's unsurprising that Disney's new Percy Jackson trailer doesn't give him any screen time. Luke is a head counselor at Camp Half-Blood, representing Hermes' cabin. He introduces himself as a friend and mentor to Percy, and he'll help the other demigod train in Percy Jackson season 1. He'll also be a part of the series' biggest bombshell, which may be why he's excluded from the trailer. Even still, Disney would be wise to set up his character arc early.

Charlie Bushnell will play Luke in the Percy Jackson adaptation, following Jake Abel, who brought the character to the big screen in the Percy Jackson movies. It's possible Bushnell is in the background of one of the Percy Jackson teaser's Camp Half-Blood shots. However, Disney+ has yet to introduce the character as one of Percy Jackson's major players.

6 Poseidon

Percy walking into the Poseidon cabin in Percy Jackson season 1

Percy is the son of Poseidon, and he'll have a run-in with his father toward the end of Percy Jackson season 1. It's a big moment for the character, which might be why the Disney+ teaser doesn't spoil it. However, many are eager to see the show's iteration of the Greek god. He'll be portrayed by Toby Stephens, and he's likely to get a grand entrance when he's finally introduced. In the interim, viewers will need to settle for the glimpse of Percy walking into the Poseidon cabin during the Percy Jackson trailer. It teases great things to come, as Poseidon is one of the series' Big Three Olympian gods.

5 Gabe Ugliano

Gabe Ugliano Percy Jackson Movies

Percy's mother, Sally Jackson (Virginia Kull), gets a brief appearance in Disney's new trailer, which teases Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief's Minotaur scene. However, the footage doesn't show the other half of Percy's living situation: his step-father, Gabe Ugliano. Riordan writes Gabe as an unpleasant and abusive, but there is a point to this seemingly minor Percy Jackson character. Due to his unlikable nature, Percy Jackson fans probably won't miss Gabe in the teaser. However, the Disney+ series will definitely introduce him in season 1. Timm Sharp is set to play Gabe, following on the heels of Joe Pantoliano's performance in the Percy Jackson movies.

4 Zeus

Zeus and Poseidon talk and brood in Percy Jackson.

Zeus will also feature prominently in Percy Jackson season 1, as the entire plot of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief revolves around locating Zeus' stolen Lightning Bolt. Disney's initial footage doesn't show this, likely because it wants to keep some of the plot details a surprise for those new to the story. However, Percy Jackson fans can rest assured that Zeus will show up in the coming episodes. Lance Reddick is playing him, taking over the role from Sean Bean, who played the Greek god in the Percy Jackson movies.

Zeus is the second member of the Olympian Big Three, with Hades rounding out the trio. Zeus drives the story forward in the first Percy Jackson book, and as one of the most important gods in Olympus, he continues to be a major player. The Disney+ teaser may not show him, but Reddick's character will appear plenty throughout the Percy Jackson series.

3 Hades

Hades Persephone Percy Jackson Movies

Hades is the final member of the Big Three, and he's also absent from Disney's Percy Jackson teaser. The king of the Underworld will appear in Percy Jackson season 1, and he'll meddle in Percy's quest to retrieve Zeus' Lightning Bolt. Jay Duplass has been cast as the Greek god, who was formerly played by Steve Coogan. Duplass is a solid choice for the deceptive and bitter Hades, and it's a shame fans don't get a glimpse of him during the new footage. Still, they'll see Duplass as Hades soon enough, as the Disney+ show is coming sooner than expected.

2 Hermes

Hermes doesn't appear until the second book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympian series, but Lin-Manuel Miranda has already been cast as the character in the Disney+ series. As such, it's likely the Greek god of travel will show up a little earlier than expected — perhaps during a scene featuring the other confirmed Olympians. Percy Jackson's new teaser doesn't offer any further insight into Miranda's role, as he doesn't appear at all during the promotional footage. Viewers will need to wait to see how Hermes factors into Percy Jackson season 1.

1 Thalia Grace

Thalia in a forest looking around in Percy Jackson

Thalia Grace is another Percy Jackson character who isn't present in the first book, but Grover tells Percy of her tragic demise. Thalia dies saving Annabeth, Luke, and Grover from monsters, and she becomes the pine tree outside of Camp Half-Blood. Her death has a massive impact on the other characters, so her story should be told in Percy Jackson season 1. With Grover conveying this information to Percy verbally, it's possible the Disney+ series will show a flashback of Thalia's final moments. Unfortunately, while the Percy Jackson teaser shows the tree, it doesn't actually show Thalia. Fans won't know if she appears until the series streams later in 2023.
