In 2015, Inside Out. The successful film stars a young girl named Riley and the emotions in her head that help her go about her day as an eleven-year-old who just moved with her family to California.
Riley shows us that it's not easy being a kid, and as a lot of us can speak from experience, it's not easy being a Millennial either. While Riley wouldn't be considered a Millennial, her movie definitely had some quotes that the generation can relate to! Here are the ten best.
"There Are At Least 37 Things Riley Should Be Scared About Right Now." - Fear
Riley has recently moved to San Francisco, and the family just arrived at their new house. Fear, keeping true to his name, is very nervous about it. That may be a bit of an understatement because he knows of almost forty things to worry about in this new situation. We Millennials tend to have a lot of anxiety, and we sometimes exaggerate a bit for comedic effect! (Not that we're saying Fear is exaggerating. We totally believe you, Fear. Thirty-seven is not a high number at all!)
"Crying Helps Me Slow Down And Obsess Over The Weight Of Life's Problems." - Sadness
If there's one thing fans know about Sadness it's that she's, well... sad. Being sad often involves crying, which many may view as a negative thing. Not Sadness though! She enjoys it and uses it to her advantage.
While some generations try to just hold a straight face or keep their emotions to themselves, Millennials are often not afraid to truly feel their feelings. They are also very aware of the problems of the world today, and most do their best to try and improve things when they can.
"We Should Lock The Door And Scream That Curse Word We Know." - Anger
If there's anybody who knows how to handle being ticked off, it's Anger. Riley and the emotions apparently know a curse word, and according to Anger, it's a good one. He's been saving it for a special occasion, and this move seems to be a fine time to use it! The moving van didn't show up, the local pizza has broccoli on, Riley left all her friends back in Minnesota, and things just seem to be getting worse! Sometimes when life gives you lemons, you just have to swear while making that lemonade.
"Almost Finished With The Potential Disasters [List]. Worst Scenario Is Either Quicksand, Spontaneous Combustion, Or Getting Called On By The Teacher." - Fear
It's a new day, and Joy is keeping Fear busy by having him make a list of the worst things that could happen for them on the first day of school. Did we mention that both he and Millennials tend to have a lot of anxiety? Nobody wants to spontaneously burst into flames, and Fear agrees that this would be a terrible thing to happen. Don't even get us started on quicksand. It seemed to be a trend to, at some point during your childhood, worry about getting stuck in quicksand, even though you lived in the suburbs and had never even stepped foot in the jungle.
"I'm Too Sad To Walk. Just Give Me A Few... Hours." - Sadness
Poor Sadness. No matter what seems to happen, she's always getting herself worked up and upset about something! This time she's a bit "blue" because she and Joy have gotten sucked out of Headquarters and are now stuck just outside of Long-Term Memory.
Riley's Islands of Personality have begun to collapse, and all just seems hopeless. Sometimes when you're sad, you just need to face-plant on the ground and take a few minutes - or hours - to yourself to regain your composure before going about the rest of your day.
"Phone Numbers? We Don't Need All These. They're In Her Phone!" - Mind Workers
Technology can be a blessing and a curse, especially cell phones. On the one hand, we have access to all of our friends at the push of a button, and with a smartphone, we can access any bit of information almost instantly! On the other hand, our minds tend to forget a lot of things because plenty of our needed information is on our phones. Phone numbers, addresses, s, directions, and many other things are at the tips of our fingers rather than the tips of our tongues. Some view this as a good thing, while others are convinced that technology is a curse.
'US Presidents. What Do You Think?' "Just Keep Washington, Lincoln, And The Fat One." - Mind Workers
The majority of people have spent hours upon hours in school by the time they're an adult, and in that time, so much gets learned! Not all of it sticks, however. Most of us just tend to bits of information from our education long enough to the test, and then it seems to slip from our brains. We see in Inside Out that faded memories get sucked away to be tossed in the dump by mind workers! We sincerely apologize to the great presidents of the past, but we really can't seem to too many of them. What was the fat one's name again?
"Ow, I Hurt All Over." - Bing Bong
Poor Millennials. We are not getting any younger, and a lot of us are realizing that the reality of getting older is a pain in the butt... and back and ts and feet... Bing Bong embodies this to a T when he crashes into a cart of memories, and he mimics this idea again later when he tries to dance but hurts himself.
It seems that Millennials can't do anything we used to be able to do without something acting up or getting a spasm. Did we really use to do cartwheels and somersaults just for fun?
"Aw, Participation Award." - Sadness
Bing Bong is showing Joy and Sadness around Imaginationland (he's practically the mayor, you know), and they've come across Trophy Town! Everyone in Trophy Town gets to receive awards, medals, trophies, ribbons, and prizes! Bing Bong wins first place for kicking a ball into a goal, and Joy reveals soon after that she won a first place ribbon as well! Sadness, however, is not so lucky. Millennials have often been called the generation of Participation Awards, but, hey, it's not their fault. It wasn't their generation giving out the awards!
"Is It All Going To Be So Interactive?" - Sadness
Imaginationland has been great so far! Besides Trophy Town, the three friends have seen French Fry Forrest and Cloud Town, and they still have lots of places to go! They'll check out Preschool World, the House of Cards, and even an Imaginary Boyfriend. They soon come to some furniture and partake in an exhilarating game of "The ground is lava!" in which the ground is actually made of lava! Not everyone is excited to be jumping from cushion to cushion, however. We can totally sympathize with Sadness on this one. Sometimes, you just need a break from life to take a nap!
