the Disney Princesses. Not all main female characters in Disney’s animated movies can be part of this select group, and most of the official come from the studio’s most successful movies.

Leading the list of official Disney Princesses is, of course, Snow White, the studio’s very first Princess and thus the original Disney Princess. The most recent addition to this group is Raya, from Raya and the Last Dragon, and it’s to be seen if there will be more Princesses who could this list in the near future. The worlds of many of these Princesses have been expanded over the years, while others have maintained their popularity through their legacy, such as Snow White and Cinderella. However, there’s one underrated Princess who Disney just keeps failing, despite her movie’s success.

The Princess & The Frog Marked Some Big Firsts In Disney History

The Princess & The Frog Has A Place In Disney History

The Princess and the Frog was released in 2009, and it’s based on the German folk tale “The Frog Prince”, collected by the Brothers Grimm, and the 2002 novel The Frog Princess by E. D. Baker. Directed by Disney legends John Musker and Ron Clements, The Princess and the Frog follows Tiana (voiced by Anika Noni Rose), a young African American woman in New Orleans during the Roaring Twenties. Tiana dreams of opening a restaurant to honor her father and his dream, and works two jobs to achieve this goal.

Meanwhile, Prince Naveen (Bruno Campos) from Maldonia has been cut off by his parents from the family fortune, so he intends to marry Tiana’s wealthy best friend, Charlotte La Bouff. When Naveen encounters voodoo witch Doctor Facilier, he’s turned into a frog, with Naveen’s valet turned into the prince’s doppelgänger. At a masquerade ball in Naveen’s honor, Naveen (as a frog) meets Tiana, mistaking her for a Princess due to her dress, and asks her to kiss him – but Tiana turns into a frog. Together, Tiana and Naveen venture into the swamps and more to find out how to break the spell.

The Princess and the Frog earned a place in Disney history as Tiana is the studio’s first African American Disney Princess, and it was the first traditionally animated movie since 2004’s Home on the Range.

The Princess and the Frog performed well at the box office and was well-received by critics, who praised the animation, music, characters, and themes. The Princess and the Frog earned a place in Disney history as Tiana is the studio’s first African American Disney Princess, and it was the first traditionally animated movie since 2004’s Home on the Range. In addition to this, Tiana is the first and so far only Disney Princess with a job, and the core of her story is her desire to open her own restaurant, instead of looking for a romantic partner.

Despite Its Success, The Princess & The Frog Hasn’t Been Expanded

At the time of writing, The Princess and the Frog has an 85% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, but despite its success and how well it was received by general audiences, Disney hasn’t expanded it yet. There are certain classics that Walt Disney refused to let be expanded, as is the case of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but from the Disney Renaissance on, many successful movies have branched out. The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin are some examples of official Disney Princess movies that have become franchises, with (lesser known) sequels, TV shows, and live-action remakes.

The Princess and the Frog hasn’t gotten a proper sequel, but it got close to it with a Disney+ spin-off TV series.

This, however, hasn’t been the case for The Princess and the Frog. The movie got a manga adaptation released to tie into the movie’s Japanese release, and the characters are part of some of Disney’s theme parks, even getting a theme park ride called Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. However, The Princess and the Frog hasn’t gotten a proper sequel, but it got close to it with a Disney+ spin-off TV series. Titled Tiana, the project was announced in 2020, and it would have followed the title Princess as she explores New Orleans.

Tiana was delayed twice, with its last projected release date being 2024, and it was meant to be among the first spin-offs produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios rather than Disney Television Animation. Unfortunately, in March 2025, it was reported that Tiana has been canceled, as the studio is moving away from making any long-form streaming content, and that the project wasn’t coming together creatively in a way that justified its production cost.

Disney's 2009 hit The Princess and the Frog was getting a small screen sequel in the form of Tiana, but the project has now been scrapped.

However, it was also reported that a Princess and the Frog special featuring the characters is currently in the early stages of development. Details about this new project are currently unknown, so it’s unclear exactly who will be ing Tiara, how it will fit the movie’s timeline, and when it could be released.

Will The Princess & The Frog Be Disney’s Next Live-Action Adaptation?

The Princess & The Frog Might Not Be Saved From The Live-Action Trend

A trend that keeps growing strong over at Disney is that of live-action adaptations of some of the studio’s most popular and successful animated movies. Former Walt Disney Animation Studios chief creative officer, Jennifer Lee, revealed in 2022 (via THR) that filmmaker Stella Meghie had attempted to pitch a live-action remake of The Princess and the Frog, but she was, instead, chosen to lead Tiana (though she was later replaced by Joyce Sherri).

At the time of writing, there have been no teases or updates of a live-action adaptation of The Princess and the Frog. However, given that Disney shows no signs of stopping this trend and no animated movie is safe from it, it wouldn’t be surprising if it happens in the near future.
