Summary

  • Marvel Studios to reduce movie/TV shows, with a bigger focus on quality.
  • Marvel movies revealed will have a limited release schedule.
  • Bob Iger confirms 2-3 films/year, with a selected number of MCU TV shows on Disney+.

Marvel Studios will be reducing the amount of movies and TV shows they release from the The Infinity Saga, the MCU has been focusing on the concept of alternative realities through The Multiverse Saga. As of right now, they are almost halfway through the arc as Phase 5 still has a number of movies and TV shows to release before entering Phase 6.

Iger, who has made it a mission to focus on quality over quantity since his return to Disney, revealed on a recent Disney quarterly earnings call that Marvel Studios is limiting its movie release to 2-3 films a year, with the same applying to their TV shows on Disney+. The Walt Disney Studios president gave the following statement on their future plans while also hyping up the next round of Avengers movies, including Avengers: Secret Wars

We’re slowly going to decrease volume...And we’re working hard on what that path is. A couple of good films in 2025 and then we’re heading to more Avengers which we’re extremely excited about. Overall, I feel great about the slate. It’s something, as you know, that I’ve committed to spending more and more time on. The team is one that I have tremendous confidence in and the IP that we’re mining, including all the sequels that we’re doing, is second to none.

Why Disney's MCU Release Strategy Is Exactly What The Franchise Needs

While it may be disappointing to some MCU fans out there that Marvel Studios is scaling back, this is one of the best things to happen to the franchise in a very long time. Since the beginning of The Multiverse Saga, the MCU has had its number of problems behind the scenes, including the global COVID-19 pandemic that affected several of its releases in 2021. However, prior to Iger's return to Disney, the MCU increased release quantity, and quality suffered, especially in light of the launch of Disney+ as one of their next big platforms.

By going down with its number of TV shows and movie releases, the MCU will be able to focus on the creative side a lot more and ensure the end result improves. It seems likely that certain MCU issues, particularly with VFX and writing, may have been do to simply too much content being developed too quickly. But with Iger's new initiative, this will ideally not be a problem anymore, especially as they head into Phase 6 and beyond.

X-Men '97 is a perfect example of what happens when the production and creative team are allowed to properly map out their product, as it is currently one of the most well-received properties for Marvel Studios. What Iger's comments mean for MCU TV shows and movies in 2025 and beyond remains to be seen, but some release dates are bound to get pulled off from next year's line-up shortly. For now, time will tell what other changes are in store for the MCU.
