Tom Clancy's the Year 2 expansion, Warlords of New York. Since that release, Massive has kept a steady content flow of in-game events cycling weekly for players to engage with old and new Division 2 content in various unique ways.
Unfortunately, with the second season of this new content style, things have slowed down greatly. This is especially true for the more casual players not interested in Destiny 2's new Iron Horse raid, which released in early July.
In hopes of re-engaging both its core and casual audience, today on their weekly State of the Game live stream, Massive has announced the introduction of a new transmogrification system to The Division 2. With this new system, players can change the look of their gear to perfect their visual aesthetic without having to worry about compromising their hard-earned stats.
What Division 2's Transmogrification Is & How It Works
Transmogrification, or transmog, is a feature generally associated with the MMO genre. It refers to a system or set of systems that allow players to collect not only loot, but the look of that loot, and apply it to any of their currently equipped gear. In general, this application of a specific modification would not change the stats or perks associated with a piece of The Division 2's gear, merely how it looks to the player and those around them. Say a player found a very powerful set of boots, but they look broken and dilapidated. This player could then transmog those boots to look shiny and beautiful without compromising their higher stats.
Like many other games that have already implemented transmog systems, The Division 2 will now allow players to apply new looks to their favorite gear. Every piece of armor including masks, backpacks, chests, kneepads, gloves, and holsters can be altered. This also applies to gear of all rarities from common grays to high-end golds and even the coveted Gear Sets. Weapons are unfortunately not included in this addition and neither are The Division 2's exotics in any way. No exotic can be altered and no items can be altered to look like exotics.
One great piece of information is that the application of the new looks is being treated just like gear color. Appearance modifications in The Division 2 are not single-use, they are unlocked. This means that applying a transmog to an item does not cost anything or have any degree of loss upon use. Also, if an item is broken down or sold, players don’t have to worry about losing the transmog with it.
To change the appearance of an item, simply inspect it as if to apply a gear mod and hit the button for the new Mod Appearance tab. This will pull up a library displaying every unlocked and show the player which they can apply. Appearances can be unlocked in two ways. First, any appearance can be unlocked simply by owning the item when the feature goes live. Secondly, the moment a new item is looted, it will be added to the player's library as well. These unlocks are -wide and apply to all characters at once.
The only restriction here is that the library of appearances is not retroactive. This means that if a player had a piece of loot at one time and have since sold or deconstructed it, they will need to farm it again in order to apply its appearance. This can be accomplished relatively easily by farming the daily rotation of Targeted Loot.
After a summer of very little new content for non-elite players, its good to see Massive and The Division 2 active again. There is more content promised for the end of the summer, including a new Skyscraper mode, with details being revealed on September 2nd. Hopefully with this new transmog system in place, players can perfect their new builds and look extra sleek in the process.
