A new next two Avengers movies. There is still no official word on just how Downey playing Doctor Doom will be explained in-universe after his time as Tony Stark.

Be it through whatever means Marvel chooses to explain the story, Doctor Doom will soon arrive, and based on the names confirmed for the Doctor Doom's story and goal in the film are being kept a secret, a past X-Men event in the MCU could serve to explain what the villain is up to, as a shocking Avengers: Doomsday theory suggests.

The Multiverse Saga Has Brought Some Complex Ideas To The MCU

Deadpool & Wolverine became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, giving the MCU a major win that the franchise needed, as it had been facing criticism and had only one movie to release in 2024 to help turn things around. Since the film was focused on Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool and a new variant of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, it had to be a major multiversal event, which the Marvel team knocked out of the park. Deadpool & Wolverine's setup allowed the MCU to introduce the concept of Anchor Beings, which serve a key role in the multiverse.

An Anchor Being is a character who is crucial to their universe, in the sense that if they die, their universe will slowly start to crumble over time until it is fully destroyed. The R-rated movie explained that by making Jackman's original Wolverine the Anchor Being of Deadpool's universe. After he died in 2017's Logan, the Merc With a Mouth's universe was on its way to being fully shut down. However, the film also revealed that Anchor Beings could be replaced, as it swapped Jackman's original Wolverine for the variant who failed the X-Men but later became a hero.

A new Avengers: Doomsday theory shared by ExplodingStart on Reddit suggests that Doctor Doom could do the same thing Deadpool and Wolverine did to save Wade Wilson's universe, only he would not be as altruistic in his actions. After Deadpool & Wolverine introduced the concept of Anchor Beings, fans started to ponder who would be the character to serve in that role on Earth-616. While there are a few who could, the only one that feels like an equivalent of the importance Jackman's Wolverine had to Fox's X-Men universe is Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man.

Like Wolverine in Logan, Downey's Iron Man died in Avengers: Endgame, where he sacrificed himself to defeat Thanos. The Russo Brothers, directors of the Avengers movies, have revealed to The Times that Tony Stark's death will play a role in Doctor Doom's story. The new Avengers: Doomsday theory suggests that upon learning that Iron Man is connected to him, Doctor Doom uses his vast magic knowledge — he has even become Sorcerer Supreme in Marvel Comics — to take Stark's place as the Anchor Being of Earth-616. This way, Doom would save the universe and block the Avengers from killing him.

The MCU's Avengers Movies Have Already Set Up The Perfect Roap

Thanos is the biggest villain the MCU has had so far. He is also the only one to win on a massive scale, with the Mad Titan erasing half of the universe in Avengers: Infinity War. Doctor Doom is another major villain from the comics who has more than enough power and resourcefulness to end up victorious in the MCU. With the Russo Brothers, directors of Infinity War and Endgame, helming the two Avengers movies of the Multiverse Saga, there is a good chance that they could follow the dynamic of their two Avengers films, with Doom winning in Doomsday.

After all, it would allow the MCU to follow the comics. Avengers: Secret Wars will be based on a comic book event of the same name, and in it, after incursions threatened to destroy the multiverse, Doctor Doom rose to power and created Battleworld. The patchwork planet was made of pieces from iconic locations from all over the Marvel multiverse, with heroes, villains, and their multiverse variants scattered throughout Battleworld's regions. If Doctor Doom wins at the end of Avengers: Doomsday, as the theory suggests, he could create Battleworld, leading to the location being used for all of Secret Wars.
