Warning: contains spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #80.BEY!

Marvel's to realize Spider-Man's biggest secret...even as he partners with Aunt May to find Peter's assailants.

In current Marvel continuity, Peter Parker is no longer Spider-Man...or at least, is unable to perform his duties as Spider-Man. After a deadly radiation-based attack from the U-Foes, Peter is bedridden in a hospital, suffering from radiation poisoning. Thus, Ben Reilly has assumed the mantle as Marvel's "main" Spider-Man courtesy of the Beyond Corporation (they even plan to sue Miles Morales for infringing on Spider-Man's copyright). With doctors unable to determine exactly how to help Peter, Aunt May seeks out a friend: Otto Octavius, to whom she very infamously almost married in Amazing Spider-Man #131.

Doctor Octopus agrees to help Aunt May with the use of multiple gadgets, including an omnidirectional scanner. The two catch up on old times before continuing on the trail. All the while, however, the reader is made aware that Otto has absolutely no idea that May Parker's nephew is secretly Spider-Man, one of his most hated enemies. Otto and Spider-Man have a closer history than most of the webslinger's villains in that Otto has actually been Spider-Man, thanks to the events in Superior Spider-Man.

In Sony's Spider-Man films (as well as the films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe), it has become a bit of a running joke among the fandom that Spider-Man's true identity is the worst-kept secret in the franchise. All of the villains in Sam Raimi's films discovered Parker's secret, as well as the Lizard, the Vulture, and Mysterio in the latter films. In comics, however, the face underneath the mask is a closely-guarded secret. Still, it seems an incredible misstep for Otto not to know that Peter is Spider-Man, what with his considerable intellect. Reed Richards, Octavius is not, though he may consider himself to be Reed's superior (especially after arresting the hero in Devil's Reign #1)

At the end of the issue, May and Otto part ways once May sees that Octavius is still a violent and power-hungry man. This is the tragedy of Doctor Octopus; he uses his intelligence for conquering and crime rather than help humanity at large. Denizens of New York City are frequently attacked by Doctor Octopus, but at least Spider-Man's secret identity remains safe - for now.
