Doctor Odyssey star Phillipa Soo has weighed in on the potential future of her character's simmering love triangle. ABC’s maritime medical procedural wasted no time in spicing things up in its midseason finale when Dr. Max (Joshua Jackson), Avery (Soo), and Tristan (Sean Teale) took their unspoken tension straight to the bedroom for a fiery ménage à trois. Afterward, Avery proposed the idea of a throuple within the luxury cruise ship's medical trio, but her coworkers weren't ready to share.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Soo mentions that "there's always a chance" for the series to return to Avery's throuple idea. As the Ryan Murphy series enters the latter half of season 1, Avery's pregnancy still remains a major question as entanglements with other Odyssey crew complicate things further. However, Soo is hoping Doctor Odyssey will double down on its unconventional approach to romance. Read what she had to say below:
I don't want to tease too much, but their relationship continues to grow. I was certainly surprised by [it]. I was really surprised by how all of these characters are actually just trying their best, and I think in a conventional love triangle story, maybe it can get a little, for the sake of drama's sake, making it fiery.
At the core, I think it's just three characters that are just really trying their best to do well at their jobs because they're here to do a job and they all work together, but also to really try and figure it out with each other and for each other. There's a generosity there that is unique to their particular love triangle. So yes, it grows, it changes, it ebbs and flows. You'll get to see a bunch of things play out...
We've never seen it on television before in this way and in this particular arrangement in this particular genre. I'm fascinated by it. This idea of conventional relationships, we've only scratched the surface about what that can be for people. And even just the conversation alone, I think it's such a strange new thing that some people have no exposure to whatsoever.
So seeing it on the screen and for everybody to be aware of and explore for themselves I think is really great. Humans are complicated, so the more that we can see things like this wonderful throuple or any other complicated human relationships that we can see, play out on such a national stage I think is awesome.
What This Means For Doctor Odyssey
Max, Avery, and Tristan's Love Story Is Far From Over
Despite Max and Tristan initially rejecting Avery’s idea of a throuple in episode 7, "Oh Daddy," Soo’s comments suggest the possibility isn’t entirely dead. There’s still a chance the trio could reconsider—especially with emotions running high due to Avery’s pregnancy and the ongoing romantic entanglements aboard The Odyssey.
The show has already proven it isn’t afraid to push boundaries when it comes to romance, and with Soo openly advocating for more nuanced explorations of relationships, Doctor Odyssey could use the second half of season 1 to revisit the idea of polyamory. If the ABC series chooses to take this route, it would be one of the few network dramas to dive into the complexities of a throuple relationship among TV series like Netflix's She's Gotta Have It, the Canadian comedy-drama You Me Her, and Showtime's L Word: Generation Q.

Now I Understand Why Athena Is The Only 9-1-1 Character In The Doctor Odyssey Crossover, And I'm Happy About It
Athena being the only 9-1-1 character to appear in the crossover with Doctor Odyssey was disappointing, but now I realize it was for the best.
Even if Max and Tristan stand firm in their decision, Avery’s pregnancy dilemma remains central to Doctor Odyssey’s unfolding drama. Whether she chooses between her two coworkers, seeks love elsewhere, or a triad is actually realized, tensions continue to rise after Odyssey's midseason return, which saw the young nurse stumble upon Max and trauma surgeon Dr. Brooke Lane (Adrienne Palicki) in a rather compromising position in the former's private quarters.
Our Take On Doctor Odyssey's Potential Throuple
Doctor Odyssey Should Fully Embrace The Trio
Instead of forcing Avery to choose, Doctor Odyssey has a rare chance to explore a polyamorous relationship in a major broadcast series. Soo’s enthusiasm proves that the potential is there, and the chemistry is undeniable. Rather than framing their romance as a rivalry, the show could give a fresh take on the overdone love triangle that could continue on in Doctor Odyssey season 2. With emotions running high, Doctor Odyssey should challenge expectations and give the throuple an honest exploration. Unconventional relationships can be just as compelling, if not more so, than the traditional love stories we’ve seen before.
