Warning: SPOILERS for Strange #8
Marvel's Wong, of all people, would become the next Sorcerer Supreme after his predecessor. In Strange #8, Marvel explains precisely why.
In the world of Marvel Comics, Wong was Doctor Strange's "manservent" and simply one who pledged his life to serving and protecting the Sorcerer Supreme - with his life, if necessary. This dynamic is almost completely reversed in the MCU, where Wong is a teacher and guardian of a mystical library of forbidden techniques. Strange is quite good at learning and applying knowledge, but he lacks Wong's experience - and after Strange's death in Avengers: Infinity War, Wong becomes Earth's new Sorcerer Supreme, with Doctor Strange as his second-in-command.
In Strange #8, written by Jed MacKay with art by Stefano Landini, the former director of W.A.N.D. (a magical version of SHIELD) relates the backstory of the organization, along with the reason why Strange's wife Clea is so strong against the Blasphemy Cartel: simply put, no one expected her to inherit Strange's title of Sorcerer Supreme. Similarly to Batman's contingency plans, WAND had countermeasures for every potential Sorcerer Supreme on file. "Doom, Mordo, Drumm, Maximoff, Rasputina, Kaplan, even Wong...there were contingency plans in place if any of them should become Sorcerer Supreme."
Wong Was On The Bottom Of The List For Sorcerer Supreme
While Strange's wife Clea was clearly never even considered (despite her Dark Dimension abilities), the "even" before Wong's name implies he was at the very bottom of the list. This hierarchy makes sense when one realizes that Doctor Doom, the Scarlet Witch and other incredibly powerful magic s also make the cut. Apparently, Wong is powerful because he is underestimated - but he is still not the Sorcerer Supreme in Marvel Comics. Unfortunately, neither is Doctor Strange, who is currently dead and in the guise of the Harvestman, Death's own right hand.
Does this mean that Wong is not fit to take up the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme in the comics? Not exactly - it simply means he isn't the best possible candidate. It is interesting that the list mentioned Doctor Doom of all people before him, but that may mean Doom has more raw power. Doctor Strange's death leaves a massive gap in the magical security of the world in the Marvel Universe, but unfortunately Wong is not trusted enough to fill it.
