Big Finish has announced an range of the Daleks have always been the Doctor's most fearsome foes. They may not be much to look at - they're commonly compared to giant pepperpots - but they are ruthless and cunning, burning with a ion to exterminate all other life-forms.

The classic 1988 story "Genesis of the Daleks" saw Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor sent back to avert the creation of the Daleks, with the Time Lords fearing there would come a time when they threatened all life in the universe. He failed in his mission, and when Russell T. Davies relaunched Doctor Who in 2005 he revealed the Time Lords' greatest fears had become a reality. The Daleks had become a threat even to the Time Lords of Gallifrey, and all time and space had been wracked by a terrible Time War between the Time Lords and the Daleks.

Now, Big Finish has announced a new range of Doctor Who audio adventures that will reveal the scale of the Dalek threat. In April next year, David Tennant will reprise the role of the Tenth Doctor in a series of adventures that see him plunged into the universe immediately before the Time War. This was the" Dalek Universe," and the Doctor will have to fight for survival against familiar threats such as the Daleks, the Movellans, and of course Davros himself.

The new "Dalek Universe" range comprises nine hour-long episodes, and Tennant seems to be thrilled at the concept. "It's a big old epic sweep," he observed. "It reminds me a little bit of those Flash Gordon serials that used to be on the TV during the school holidays when I was a kid." This is the first full series of Tenth Doctor adventures since Tennant left the series over a decade ago, and each story will be standalone, meaning fans can choose to either purchase the entire range of go for individual episodes. "This time the Doctor has no TARDIS for sanctuary," Big Finish Senior Producer David Richardson revealed, "and no Rose or Martha or Donna to help." There will be some familiar faces, though, with fans recognizing Anya Kingdom (Jane Slavin), who betrayed the Fourth Doctor years ago.

It will be interesting to see just how David Tennant's Tenth Doctor gains access to the "Dalek Universe." This entire period of history was supposed to be time locked after the end of the Time War, but there have already been signs those barriers are failing; the current "Time Lord Victorious" transmedia arc will see different Doctors find their way into the Dark Times, a period previously thought to be inaccessible. It's possible "Dalek Universe" will build from "Time Lord Victorious," suggesting fans can expect lasting changes to the Doctor Who mythology.
