Doctor Who: Flux has dropped a big hint about what to expect from the season finale. Featuring an epic conflict between The Doctor and a collection of new villains, the series represents a shift from previous modern interpretations of the iconic sci-fi character. However, while there is no certainty over how this particular story arc will conclude, there are already several promising clues for audiences.

Doctor Who: Flux is the 13th season of the long-running science-fiction series. Harkening back to the show’s serialized roots, this season follows one single story spread across six episodes. Doctor Who: Flux will be the last full season from showrunner Chris Chibnall and actress Jodie Whittaker, who are both set to leave the series in 2022. Flux has unleashed a torrent of new plot threads and mysteries for viewers to puzzle over. With, Swarm, Azure, and enger, The Doctor has a new rogue’s gallery of villains to contend with and more than enough trouble on her hands. The Doctor and Swarm have been duking it out since the dawn of time, with no definitive resolution in sight.

Doctor Who: Flux is setting up for a rematch on the planet Time between The Doctor and Swarm. Season 13, episode 3, “Once, Upon Time” dove into The Doctor’s past and revealed the Fugitive Doctor on a secret mission for Division, attempting to stop Swarm and rescue countless hostages. While the Fugitive Doctor was successful at the time, the show is heading for a finale that will repeat the Fugitive Doctor’s mission, with Swarm and Azure once again holding hostages on Time. This time, rather than the Fugitive Doctor, it will be the Thirteenth Doctor on a mission to defeat the Ravagers once and for all.

Swarm, Azure and enger confront the doctor

While the Fugitive Doctor and her fellow Division agents were able to rescue some of the hostages in their original mission, Swarm and Azure are once again in control of at least one enger. Not only does this mean that they have the means to repeat their plan, in season 13, episode 4, “Village of the Angels,” Azure is actually seen stocking enger with fresh souls. Swarm and Azure have already demonstrated that they’re capable of returning to The Temple of Atropos whenever they desire, giving them all the components necessary for a rematch on Time.

Appropriately for a story that takes place at so many points in time spread across the universe, Doctor Who: Flux has already demonstrated a motif of events repeating throughout time. The schemes of both the Sontarans and the Angels featured parallel events spread out across the centuries, with circumstances repeating or mirroring each other. In fact, Flux as a whole seems to be a story where events echo throughout history. With them still at each other’s throats, another showdown between The Doctor and swarm is all but inevitable, yet another repeating element for Flux.

The final sequence of season 13, episode 4, “Village of the Angels” shows The Doctor being recalled by Division. While details remain unknown, it sounds as if The Doctor may once again be at the beck and call of the secretive Time Lord agency. Her first mission could be a repeat of the one from her past, a mission to planet Time to finish what she started so many centuries ago. With Doctor Who: Flux so focused on The Doctor’s origin, a return to the beginning might just make for a perfect end.
