Warning: Spoilers ahead for Doctor Who season 15, episode 7, "Wish World."Doctor Who's classic era. The Rani's return also means Omega's return, which has strong shades of the season 14 finale.
Omega last appeared in Doctor Who as an adversary for Peter Davison's Fifth Doctor in 1983's "Arc of Infinity." A key figure in the creation of the Time Lord order, Omega was believed to be dead after his run-in with Five. Doctor Who's Disney era, but he isn't the first classic-era villain to receive this treatment.
Doctor Who's Omega Return Feels A Lot Like Sutekh's Comeback
The God of Death's comeback serves as a blueprint for Omega's long-awaited return
Sutekh returned as the overarching villain of Doctor Who season 14, and like Omega, he also hadn't been seen in the show for a very long time. Referred to cryptically as "The One Who Waits" before finally being revealed as the God of Death, Sutekh's presence remained a secret until the time was right, and the Rani calling Omega "The One Who is Lost" creates another parallel between both twists. The fact that they've both been brought back from some hidden plane of existence strengthens the connection even further.
Furthermore, neither character is the same as they were the first time around. Sutekh wasn't a God in his 1975 debut, "The Pyramids of Mars," nor was Omega when he was last seen. They were an Osiran and a Gallifreyan respectively, and while those identities remain as part of their larger backstories, their reintroduction to the saga has them among the Pantheon rather than remaining independent villains.
Omega is also revealed to be trapped in the "Underverse" in "Wish World," whereas he is most commonly associated with the Anti-Matter Universe in Doctor Who's classic era.
The Doctor's TARDIS has also factored heavily into the comebacks of Sutekh and Omega. For Sutekh, he was aboard the blue box the entire time, and seemingly had been since Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor defeated him in 1975. The villain then deposited an Angel of Death everywhere the TARDIS landed, creating a network to amplify his Death Wave through all time and space. Similarly, the Rani used the Doctor's recent travels with the Vindicator to generate a web of power aimed at May 24, 2025, which she used to boost Desiderium's Wish powers and help bring Omega back.
I Hope Doctor Who Handles Omega's Return Better Than Sutekh's
RTD's decision to resurrect Omega needs to be approached with care
It was really cool that Sutekh was able to come back in Doctor Who season 14, but it wasn't without its issues. He posed a genuine threat and was motivated merely by the allure of spreading death throughout the universe, which is a tricky set of moral values for the Doctor to dispel from the villain. However, how he initially returned was a little hard to believe. Hiding aboard the TARDIS for centuries installs Sutekh into the majority of Doctor Who canon, but his presence somehow didn't cause the Doctor any problems for an incredibly long time.
"The Reality War" is set up to be a brilliantly chaotic Doctor Who finale, so hopefully it can stick the landing and handle Omega's return more convincingly than Sutekh's.
I'm glad that Omega's comeback at the end of "Wish World" currently appears to have no connection to the Doctor beyond the Rani's recent meddling. So, I'm confident his return will feel more authentic than Sutekh's and will avoid poking quite as many holes in the show's six-decade history. "The Reality War" is set up to be a brilliantly chaotic Doctor Who finale, so hopefully it can stick the landing and handle Omega's return more convincingly than Sutekh's.
